I have taken it 4 times. I have never gotten sick from it or experienced any side effects. My periods were normal afterwards also. I finally got on the shot because I was tired of dealing with condoms.

your first statement is untrue.

Plan B CAN work within 72 hours. and the sooner you get it, the highger your chances it will work... there's no 'working better' or 'working not as well...' for Plan B. it either stops the sperm from fertilizing the egg, or it doesn't.

the sooner you get it, the better your chances of not getting pregnant.

I have bad reactions to virtually EVERYTHING except aspirin, and this was remarkably painless. I will probably take a pregnancy test in a few days just to be sure, but I feel very relieved. Maybe nothing would have happened if I had done nothing, but I feel infinitely better knowing that I made certain that nothing happened. I am very adamantly pro-choice, but I know in my heart that actually terminating a pregnancy would be a very painful for me. I believe I would choose to terminate it, but I also know that it would probably hurt me for a very long time, maybe forever.

Having to use EC has definitely made me reevaluate my current birth control methods; I don't ever want to end up here again! But, it also has made me think of how long women have suffered - and continue to suffer in places where there is a lack of access, even here in the United States - because they have not been able to control their fertility and plan their pregnancies. Birth control, condoms, trained abortion providers, these things have so completely improved the quality of women's lives. I can't express how grateful I am to have the options available to me to make choices about having a family.

All I can say is I'm very glad that the progestin ECPs are the more commonly available/administered option these days. Just from reading this thread, researching, and my own personal experience, Plan B and Next Choice seem to be safe and relatively painless options. Obviously some do have bad experiences, but at least the progestin pills have decreased the likelihood of these experiences. For anyone in the future that stumbles onto this thread, I really do recommend Plan B or Next Choice. The worst possible side effects seem to be cramps, nausea and, in a small proportion (only 6%) of women, vomiting. The only downside is the cost. If you have Planned Parenthood nearby - as well as the luxury of time to make an appointment or wait for walk-in hours - then definitely go there! less

I agree with everything you've said. I know a lot of girls who could have used Plan B in High School and college. I mean, the technology was available (a few doctors would tell a girl to take 3 or 4 regular BC pills asap) but it wasn't packaged, nor promoted. I'm glad we have it, now.

actually, the first thing Plan B does is to try to stop ovulation completely. Taking it asap after the unprotected sex will be more likely to stop ovulation than to resort to the second effect which is to cause a "hostile environment for implantation" in the uterus, IF an egg does get matured, and then fertilized.

It doesn't prevent sperm from doing anything. They still do what they do, swim around looking for an egg. Plan B has no effect whatsoever on sperm.

Simply stopping ovulation usually results not only in few or no cramps, but also no "Ooops, fertilized egg" to deal with. Of course, if you've already ovulated, it will cause the uterine lining to become "hostile" to implantation. As pregnancy cannot occur without implantation you simply aren't pregnant until the fertilized egg is implanted, Plan B and its generic can never cause abortion. Abortion can ONLY take place after a fertilized egg is implanted, which can take anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks after insemination. Averaging at about 7 to 10 days. Plan B can't do anything about an implanted fertilized egg. It's too late, then. As this can happen in as little as 3 days, (more commonly longer) you do need to take the pills quickly. Also, it's easier if you're only preventing ovulation, but usually you have no idea what happened. You just don't get pregnant.

But, all these effect work "better" the sooner it is taken. After 72 hours, it may not work at all. As you conceivably (sorry) get actually pregnant at 4 days, (although rare) and you may have ovulated the day you had the intercourse, taking it as soon after the intercourse really does make it more likely to work.

For instance, if you ovulated on the DAY you had the unprotected intercourse, and waited 2 or 3 days to take the Plan B and for some reason the fertilized egg DID implant while you were waiting, the Plan B will do NOTHING to an implanted egg. Also, it works better at preventing ovulation than "making the uterus hostile" after ovulation, so taking it sooner actually does cause more efficacy in most cases.
