Have you ever locked your keys in your vehicle?

Contributor: K101 K101
Well, I guess you can imagine what inspired me to ask this question! Ha. Ha.

My kind, precious Lovie locked the keys in his truck earlier. No, this is not the first time he's done that! Ha Ha. He once locked the keys in his truck a few years ago when we first started seeing each other. Me, him and my twin sister were stuck in a parking lot in 100 degree heat for hours waiting on a lock smith! Talk about a heat stroke! That taught us to learn other methods of getting the keys out of a locked vehicle--the hanger method! It also taught me to ask him "do you have the keys?" every time we get out of the car. I've asked him that question since that day he locked us out 5 years ago! Unfortunately, I wasn't with him when he locked them in the truck earlier tonight. Thankfully though, we were home so it wasn't a huge deal.

He ended up getting it open with the hanger method Thank God, I've never ever locked my keys in my car! That's probably partly thanks to seeing him do it, I pay close attention. I was only a teen when we first started seeing each other so I was able to learn early to check for your keys before locking doors! Lol. I hope and pray I don't end up locking myself out after bragging now.

So, have you guys ever done this? If so, how did you get back into your vehicle? Did you call a lock smith, use the hanger (or some other) method? Have a spare key to save you? I'd love to hear ya'll's experiences!

I did this a couple of weeks ago. I don't have a spare, so thankfully the maintenance department at my job had special tools to get it unlocked. Thanks for the post, you just reminded me that I need to get a spare key made. lol

I have used hangers many times, even when there is no knob to grab on to. I also have used them to fish the keys off the seat before. Once I pulled the side, back window out of my bug so I could get in. Man the look on peoples faces.

One time I locked the keys in the wife's truck while it was running. I used a pry bar to pry open the door just enough to fit a 1/4" dowel through to push the unlock button on the arm rest.

Nowadays we both keep a spare in our wallet/purse and there is a key stashed on both trucks as well. One problem with my truck is that it has a computer chip in the key, I lose it I have to spend $75 or so. I can get a spare for the door but it will not start the truck.

Even better? I just found out how to get the code for the combo pad on both trucks. So now we don't even need a key.

I got spares made as soon as I bought my car. I was so paranoid that I would lock my keys in the car and it was a good thing too. I've locked my keys in the car a number of times but my boyfriend has a key and I keep another at my dads house.

I used to have a second key on my husband's key ring and a third at a friends house. I have run my car out of gas because I left it running and subconsciously locked my door as I got out. It has been many years since I have done it, probably because we have upgraded to smarter cars.

We hope to upgrade to smarter cars sometime soon. Too much going to tuition right now!

I've done it too many times to count. A month ago I locked a friends keys in his car - don't ask it was crazy!

I've done it so much that my dad, mom AND fiance all have a key to unlock my door. It's been awhile since I done it. Once I had to wait for someone to drop the key off when I got off work and it was SO hot but I didn't want to go back in that place. They brought the wrong key and I had to wait AGAIN!

I locked my keys in the car sneaking around with a boyfriend in high school in the middle of winter with the car running and the heat full blast, he had to drive me 20mins home and 20mins back to unlock it.

I've paid a lock smith 2 or 3 times.

I locked them in at the gym and had to get my fiance out of bed to come use his tools to get the door open....then the very next night I did it again!

I remember a time in high school I did it at work and called my dad, when he got there he came in and handed me my keys and told me I had my passenger window down....lol oops!

One car I had, had the remote to open the trunk and I had to take out the big box speakers and unlatch the back seat and crawl in through the trunk!

Yeah, I'm an idiot about that....but it's funny and I'm not embarrassed, it happens....to me more than most. I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that stand out in my memory.

I've never done it myself, but I can count like three really entertaining instances where it's happened to friends I was with. Once we had to hack open the trunk and have a very fun game of jenga to open the door, once I was able to save the day with a clothes hanger, and one time we really did need a locksmith.

Oh no! Sounds disasterous, but great that the combo pad will keep you from needing a key! That's a good idea.

Lol you poor thing! Sounds like you had an awful time when you had the key brought to you, then it was the wrong one! Ugh. How frustrating! LOL Sounds like you've had some terrible encounters with the keys being locked in! Goodness, I'd be pulling out hair. Good that you can laugh about it, really. It probably makes it easier. My lovie has a really bad memory. REALLY BAD! Lol.

I locked my keys in the car once, middle of winter out in my driveway in the middle of the night. I had to stand outside with just a light jacket on waiting for the tow truck to come and rescue me. It was not a fun experience, when he got to my house I had to ask him if I could sit in his truck because I was so frozen I thought hypothermia was going to set in. It ended up costing me $75 but I told him the price of being able to go and jump into my bed was priceless.

I am usually paranoid about keys, wallet and phone, because I know I tend to be absent minded with other things, so I don't think this is something I would do even if I traveled by car. I have left my keys in the office before, but I usually notice right away and can turn around and grab them.

I have locked my keys in the car more times than I can count lmao. My old Malibu that my ex and I owned......The door frame was so jacked up on the drivers side and the foam rubbery insert thingy that was in there was actually starting to tear apart from us having to pry it open so many times LMAO. The one time, I locked my son in the car on accident, at school when I was going to night school....the fire dept had to come unlock it LMAO!
