Have you ever watched a meteor zip by?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
I saw a bright one, late last night. Although they always look like they "fell somewhere", odds are, nothing ever reached the ground. Still, it's very cool to see something from deep space come into our atmosphere.

Several times -- when I'm gazing at the meteor showers.

Is that the same as a shooting star? I've seen one of those, once. I live in a big metropolis so I can hardly ever see the stars due to our air pollution and how bright the city is - even at night.

Yes, I have, and it was amazing. Doesn't happen nearly as often as it should.

Yes they were! If you're interested, you can follow the information on EarthSky -- it tells you the approximate meteor shower schedules for the entire year.

Just a few nights ago we were driving home after doing a bit of christmas shopping and saw a single meteor shoot through the sky.

I've seen some great ones, but totally by "accident", driving or out in the yard at night with the dogs. During those times we sat out, for hours and hours, watching "meteor showers", I never saw one directly at all!

"As often as it should"? Personally, I don't like the ideas of rocks raining down on us from space. Though it's a daily event, some of them can wreak havoc (like the recent one in Russia) and some can do real damage to your day (just ask any Dinosaur you run across)
