Browsing the forums today, I couldn't help but notice the small dot in the corner of many users avatars next to their posts and on their profile pages. It's green if they're online, grey if they're offline, and I presume that the ones without it are those who have their online/offline status turned off. I haven't seen that before, but since there was no mention of it in the site updates for today, I'm wondering if I've just been blind for the past couple of months!

When I searched, I found a couple of posts about status indicators from over a year ago, but when I tried to click the links in those threads, they 404'ed. I'm wondering if this was something that was toyed with last year and has been brought back?

I wouldn't necessarily call you crazy, but I'm pretty sure that's been there for a while now. Maybe more people are starting to utilize it, making it more noticeable?

I did see that page when I went snooping around for any word about it, and it's part of what made me think that it was a new feature - the word "new" is still next to it.

I wonder if perhaps it was only just turned on today with the updates for those of us who joined after it was activated in January of 2012 (from what I can tell of the threads that came up about it). I can't check join date, but after going through the profiles of all who posted that it's been there for ages, I noticed that all but one of them have activity dating back to before that date, whereas the three of us who never noticed it don't have activity going back to then and likely joined afterwards.

I just noticed that it's there on my wall as well, which tells me that this feature /definitely/ wasn't visible to me before. There is no way that I could have missed seeing those dots, because they're a really helpful concept when it comes to wall-talk. While status dots may have been visible to other members, I think that the site changes today must have activated them for me (and likely for other newer users as well).

It has been there a long time but I have mine turned off. I am all here all day long but I don't want that showing that I am on here all day long LOL. Or maybe we should start using them then they don't think we on here really fast to get points then head off. It be a good idea but for now I am leaving it off. I stick around the site even after I collect my points and still look at stuff and comment on the forum. It keeps me from getting bored real quick.

You're not crazy, but the online status indicator did go into action in January of 2012. Here is an older thread that talks about the feature which was new at the time.

You know it does go off after a bit though it will fade away then all of a sudden come back. I think when you are not moving around the site it will fade for a bit then once you start doing stuff it will come back. I noticed before that happened a couple of times when I went to pm someone and they were not on at that time.

I did read those, but thank you for linking them! I think that I've figured out why I'd never seen them before - the program changes must have caused the status function to be pushed through for newer users. Theoretically.
