Ever Heard of Private Cabs or Private Car? Would YOU use it on a trip?

I just heard about a service that is totally new to me. They call them "private cab" or "private cars". Apparently they have them in NY and LA according to the business traveler who just told me this.

Anyway, when visiting these cities, instead of just calling or hailing a cab....and whoever is driving it, and accepting whatever "condition" it is in, this new service is one where you pay a preset fee UP FRONT, for the time you are going to be in that city. He was not sure of the cost, but thought it was like $50 a day. However, once you pay that, you can call the service, any hour of the day or night, and they guarantee you a lift in a NICE, CLEAN vehicle and with a pre-screened driver that has had full background checks and even attended "professional driving school". Of course, you STILL pay for the fare to go to wherever you are going and the fares, supposedly, are specified clearly as being MORE then regular cab fares by about 25%.

Sounds like a neat idea, if you've got money to spend and want the best in transportation....but still not sure if it is worth all that???

Would YOU avail yourself of that kind of service???

Do it all the time! I've used car services in NY because usually when I'm there for meetings I don't want to have to hail a cab to each location. I call before I'm ready to go and they arrive and pick me up. We have a service here in Atlanta that we use on a regular basis to and from the airport so we don't have to pay parking. It actually ends up being cheaper. They run a limo service too and once when I was flying to DC with my boys they didn't have sedans available so they sent a stretch limo for the same price. My boys thought that was the coolest part of our trip! The ride to the airport!! Hahaha

It's not really something new. When I was a kid living in Hong Kong, that's my ride to and from elementary school, but my parents pay the driver once a month instead of every ride.

This doesn't sound much different than a regular car service, but a lot more expensive. In Seattle there are a number of standard car services with professional background-checked drivers, that are just cheap as a taxi if not cheaper. I love those car services, but this one in particular sounds like it probably isn't worth it to me.
