Home remedies for the common cold?

I'm miserable in bed with a cold! Looking for anything to try and shorten the duration of this cold so I can go out for New Year's. So far I have a steam machine in my room and I've been drinking broth/tea and Emergen-C nonstop. Any suggestions??
