How do you talk to your pets?

Contributor: SydneyScreams SydneyScreams
I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I talk to my pets. Sometimes I talk to them like they're mature, sane adults that understand me, other times I talk to my pets using a "baby" voice.

I talk to my cat at times, and I often use a regular tone, but I'll also use "baby talk" too. Depends on how I feel!

Yes I talk to him normal and in baby talk. I have a feeling he thinks I'm weird. But that is okay.

Sometimes I speak to them in Baby Talk, but sometimes I really want them to understand what I am saying in clear English (for instance, "get the ball", or "come here and sit"). I have three very bright Rottweilers and they really do have a great command of many words. My old boy listens...kind of, when he wants to. My younger girl is super smart and listens when there is something in it for her. Our young, big boy understands everything you tell him. I keep waiting for him to offer to do our tax returns!

Yes, I talk to my cats. I tend to talk to them like I would a kid, sometimes baby talk.

When we had dogs, I talked to them all the time. I tried not to treat them like people, but rather to get inside their heads and interact with them in a canine sort of way. We shared a lot of great communication.

Depends on the situation. When I wanted him to behave or follow my instructions, I'll talk to him in a normal tone; when he's acting all cute and playful, I'll baby-talk to him...can't help it!

I'm down to 1 hamster & 1 dog. I talk to the dog in a baby voice, he's only a year old, idk that's still a baby to me! And the hamster I just talk to in a friendly, upbeat voice. He likes it lol. I guess I'm crazy, but oh well.

Of course I talk to them! I carry on full conversations with them all the time. It is not the same as talking to my daughter--but it helps to have a conversation! They even understand more words than most pets do, seriously! I have gotten to the point where I have to spell a couple of words and the cat and Pomeranian KNOW what I am talking about!!

At bedtime we do have a goofy deal from when they were puppies--we do our snuggles and I talk goofy to them.

When they need disciplined, I do not yell, but really deepen my voice and get a super serious tone. ALL my animals jump when they hear that one from me! LOL!! (It works with my daughter still, too!!) The only time I yell is due to danger--they freeze in mid-stride. Scared because I never yell...

Dogs are the only creatures in the world with unconditional positive regard - (a Carl Rodger Psychology thing, about accepting a person 100% for who they are at that moment). How could I not tell my dog about my day, my joys, problems, and successes to the best listener in the world.

I talk to three felines that share living space with me and my family. Sometimes I use a baby voice, but more often than not I don't. They are very vocal and always respond back. And yes I can usually tell what they need/want by their vocalizations.

We always talk to our pets...just seems normal to us I guess.
Though we do tend to change between baby voices and talking to him (the dog) like he's an adult depending on the situation.

Mostly it's baby talk though...he's too damn cute and puppy sized to see as a 'grown up' most of the time. =^.^=

Once in a while we "talk" to him in doggie language too, barking and making other dog noises. He seems to respond most to that, but then again that's to be expected.

Sometimes I wonder what he hears when we do that though. xD

Oh I totally talk to my cats and they talk back. It is hilarious. Often times I can tell from the way they meow, if they know they've done something they weren't supposed to, or if they want attention or whatever. It just makes me smile with wonder all the time knowing how much they really do understand.

I always talk to my pets. I'll have full on dialogue at times, as crazy as I may sound to people. I also use baby talk at times as well, especially when I am praising good behavior.
