How would you deal with prostitutes in your neighborhood?

So, admittedly, I do not live in the best neighborhood.

But until very recently, there were only a few drug dealers down the block (like, younger mexican dudes on bicycles).

In the past two months, there is a new dynamic. First, there were two girls on the street corner late at night (I walk my dogs with my boyfriend pretty late).
Then, the next week, there were 4.

Now the few blocks that surround us are crawling with prostitutes late at night Thursday through Sunday.
I would like to say, no disrespect to those who make money this way... But this is a family neighborhood, there are children and elderly.. Sure, they aren't up from midnight to 5AM. But still.

I hate walking down my street and seeing some chick in a fricken thong, stilettos, and a shirt falling off of her ample breasts. I hate it. I called the police station, who said prostitution is a "vice" division thing and currently vice is working on taking down drug lords in the city. They won't arrest just for indecent exposure (a la miss thang in a thong), since that's a misdemeanor at most...

How would you deal with prostitutes in your neighborhood? Any suggestions?

And no, buying one is not an answer.
I'm concerned because I dislike seeing these women in next to nothing, working the streets and trying to work my boyfriend and I as we walk DOGS..., and with their pimps in the area. Pimps bring fights and fights bring violence, which I am not fond of. (These are fellows who do this, I am not making assumptions. I have heard the shouting.)

Will complaining to your local TV station work? Maybe the city council will pay attention to the matter if the media's involved. Where in LA are you? Have you consider moving to a better neighborhood? My daughter and her fiance just moved from Tustin to Orange, she felt that the Tustin area is not so safe anymore.

I live in a very small town that is made up of mostly elderly. I did see a prostitute hanging around the bar a number of times.
Everyone needs a job.
BUT - there was only one and it's in town, so it doesn't bother me with living out further.

The violence would bother me. We did make a decision to choose a safe area to live in when we realized we were going to buy a house and have kids, though. We could have gotten a place for a LOT less, but safety and freedom from the fear of daily violence was on our agenda, so we paid more to have that security.

In our area (and I thought everywhere) the police have to answer ALL calls, they can't make a refusal based on the dispatcher's opinion. I'd talk to someone with power at the police department, (like a Lieutenant or the Chief, or at least a supervisor) as my guess is the dispatcher is making judgement calls when she should be doing nothing but dispatching cops to calls.

If they refuse to care about your safety, I'd get the hell out of there. More for the fact that the police won't show up when called. WTF is that? Their job is to show up when someone calls. Not make judgement calls on whether someone will be convicted on a charge before even seeing the situation.

I would call the cops and talk to them. After all, your tax money is paying them, and that is what they are there for.

Yeah, we called the local station and that was their honest response. It really pissed me off even more.

I have looked into moving, but I have no credit and my boyfriend has shitty credit and my father has been bankrupt so... For now, we live here until I can save up enough to move elsewhere with a huge security deposit. Financially, my boy and I have been going through a rough patch. He's unemployed so I am paying the bills. We've apartment-searched, and we know exactly where we want to move when things are looking up again.

And it WAS pretty safe around here until recently. I live in Little Armenia, so half my block is old Armenian couples... and the other half consists of young Hollywood artist types, or Mexicans.

There's almost always a cop car parked on our street answering some sort of call. Right now I am hoping that the vice department closes in on the damn drug cartel so they can start busting some pimps (and move those prostitutes elsewhere). I guess it just goes to show how closely interlinked crime can be. The pimps know that the druggies are under the heat, so they can move on in without a problem...

-le sigh-

damn, sounds like a problem. I've never been to LA, but I can imagine.

Maybe start saving money and look into city/state programs to help people out in your situation?

I would say look into government housing. I know that welfare is not what a lot of people want to do but they will help you out if you have children. In Ohio there is section8 housing and all over landlords take this even in nicer areas.
