Is 2012/2013 the most over-hyped winter ever?

I think the media coverage of this winter has been the most ado about the least winter I can ever remember. I think we had a little over a foot of snow for the entire season, which is about what we used to get down South when I was growing up, and yet "OMFG — it's going to SNOW!!!" has been the general tone of the NYC area coverage. I know it's always like this to some extent, but this year has just been over the top.

I think this new thing of naming winter storms is unnecessary, too. Nemo?! Really? Give me a break!

What do you think about this winter, and the coverage thereof, where you are?

While I agree the media coverage of winter events has been blown out of proportion this year, and that this winter hasn't been as bad as winters past, I for one can't wait for Spring to roll around.

I do think the midwest and coastal regions of the US have been harder hit this year, so folks in those areas would probably disagree with your assessment that this one's been not so bad.

But, yeah...the media needs to stop using all of these fear-based tactics to keep people glued to the TV. I agree that naming the storms is lame, and it just feeds into the whole fear-generating thing. If the Weather Channel wants to improve its services, they should work on giving users who access their web data less annoying ads, weather warnings and "No information for that ZIP code" errors, and more basic weather data.

The naming thing is weird - I had no idea they were naming snowstorms until Nemo and then I was like, wait - what? And what in the world were A-M, and where did they hit? I like the "Blizzard of #year#" better - makes more sense to me.

A friend of mine was stuck six hours in her car on I-29 a few weeks ago because of one of the snowstorms. The next one she was home for, but it knocked her power out for eight hours.

I don't think it was over-hyped for her.

I'm close to NYC. I'm in NJ, but within miles of the city. So, I totally know what you mean.

It has been very hyped from what I've noticed because of a combination of talk about the world ending and stuff, disasters, and the like. This was a pretty calm one for us though because we've not gotten any snow hardly. It snowed a bit last week, for a couple of days, but it's been a lot less harsh than other years. We've never been snowed in or unable to leave due to it like past years.

I absolutely detest the naming of these snowstorms. And things like Snomageddan, Snowcopalsype, etc.

Yeah, it depends on your particular experience, for sure. I remember driving 40 hours in a blizzard years ago. When I got home, there was only a dusting on the ground. Everyone was like "Blizzard?! Doesn't look like a blizzard to ME!"

But here, this winter's been pretty tame and the local media coverage has been ridiculously sensationalist. I don't think they hyped it as much 2 years ago, when we got over 70" of snow!

Ehhh, on average everything is getting more hyped up. We've gotten a few nasty snows, but nothing that justifies snowmageddon
