Is there a TV in your bedroom?

Contributor: Kayla Kayla
I was at work earlier (a hotel), and I found it amazing, while walking by rooms, the number of rooms that had TVs on at four in the morning. Thus, I assume that most of those people turned on the TV to listen to while they slept (or fell asleep while watching it). So it leads to this question.

Some studies have shown that having a television in your bedroom actually can disrupt your sleeping patterns. When the body gets accustomed to using the bed for things other than sleep, that internal memory can actually keep us from getting to sleep. It's amazing how the mind works.

The boyfriend and I just have the single TV in the living room. Nothing in the bedroom but bookshelves (and at the moment) a sex swing stand. No particular reason for the lack of a TV - just seems silly for the bedroom.

So do you keep a TV in your bedroom? Yes or No? And any reason behind it?

I do, because it drowns out all the little creaks and outside noises that would freak me out all night if I could hear them. It definitely interferes with my sleep pattern if I leave it on all night though, so when I get in bed I set the sleep timer on it so that it goes off in an hour or two.

We do, for many reasons. One, we work for home for a home entertainment company's technical support program. My husband's office is our bedroom and he is a supervisor and needs to help out his agents. If they have a question about a channel or possible broadcast issue he can check it out.

Secondly we have it because we like to watch tv before bed. I find it actually helps us get to sleep quicker. If we watch tv downstairs and get all tired we'll inevitably wake ourselves up too much before we get up the stairs and in bed. We get to sleep much easier if we watch tv upstairs in bed and then turn the tv off when we get tired.

And finally we have one in there because that's where we watch porn if we're going to watch it! We have three kids so it's easier to just watch porn in there since we can lock the door. If we watched it downstairs there's always the chance they could wake up in the middle of the night and come downstairs and walk in on us.

I don't think it messes with our sleep personally. I love our bed, our bed screams comfort to me. When I hit that bed it relaxes me, even if we do other things in it besides sleep!

I recently added a TV to my bedroom and use it to play music watching movies and just general background noise. My TV also has a sleep timer which I do set every night so I fall asleep to the sounds of the which ever show I pick to watch and then the TV turns itself off. It works really well for me, but I'm also the kind of person who doesn't like to feel alone, so the sound of people talking makes me feel more comfortable.

We don't use it much, but it's there if I'm folding laundry or if one of the kids wants to watch something on it.

We do not have one, but we have plans to get a small flat screen.

We do but that's because my husband watches a lot of television. I, on the other hand, almost never watch TV.

I actually had to think about it! There IS a TV in the bedroom but it's never turned on. Perhaps we could sell it or something now that it's occurred to me that it's taking up space.

I've had a tv in my room for years, off and on. Mostly because I've had roomies and not everyone wants to watch what's on in the main room. I don't have one in there now. I've thought about getting one, but haven't really seen a need for it. I have a laptop I can take into my room if I want to watch something, but it hasn't really come up since my current living situation is awesome!

It did disturb my sleep when I feel asleep with it on, so I made sure to turn the sleep timer on.

Unfortunately, we do. My guy can't sleep without one droning. *sob*

We moved about four months ago, our TV in our bedroom still isn't plugged in. Then again... we haven't had new porn to watch which could play a huge factor in this. lol

I do not have a TV at all, and I would definitely not tolerate one in the bedroom if I had any. I don't even understand why people allow their kids to have one in theirs.

We don't, but in the future we probably will, if only for late night snuggling to a movie.

In our old place we did, but that was because it was a shared house where we lived out of one room, so the mr's monitor for the pc is actually a tv of ours... so it got used as a tv.

As things stand the only tv in our house that currently functions as one is the one in the living room.

Yep, we have one in our bedroom, hubby has to have one to go to sleep with, then I turn it off so I can go to sleep. So, it never effects my sleep habbits. Where else are you going to watch porn? With kids it's impossible to watch it on the living room tv, and it's also nice to lay in bed while watching tv sometimes.

Nope, but we used to. That TV broke though, and I guess we just didn't bother to replace it.

A few weeks ago, someone was selling a huge (don't remember the size, but it is big to me!) TV, and we bought it to put in my "work" room (the spare bedroom). I don't use it often, but if I am having a slow day I will totally use it.

We don't technically have one, but we both sleep better with cartoons or something on the "sleep mode." so right now we use a laptop, but soon we'll have a tv and dvd player in there.

Yes, we have a television in our bedroom, simply because we like to relax at night and watch a movie or an episode of House or CSI. We do this no more than 1-2 times per week, and we always turn the TV off right after, and trust me, watching TV in bed has never disrupted our sleeping habits.

It's nice to have a TV in the bedroom for those times where I or my husband want to escape the noisiness of the rest of the house (we have a four year old son and a five year old daughter). It's also nice for when someone is sick -- I've already holed up in our bedroom with meds and my laptop and water and protein bars for days on end haha.

Late night snuggling for a movie would be pretty awesome for a bed.

lol. I used to have a tv in every room of my house w/ my ex. But, now, we hardly ever watch tv. However, we do have one in the bedroom. We have a large bedroom with my guys recliner in there. There are teenagers in the house, so he will go up there to shut the door and relax at times. Also, we like to lay in bed in the mornings on the weekends and drink our coffee and watch the news or a movie.

But, most importantly, like everyone said, where else are you going to watch your porn? lol

I have a TV in my room, but there's definitely some reason behind it. I live with my dad, and my dad and I don't watch the same tv, at all. I bought the TV so I could watch what I wanted to. I don't really watch it just before bed, though. If I do, I turn it off just before I fall asleep. I even it turn off automatically at 1am, if I forget to. That also serves as a reminder, "hey, you're up really late! get to bed!"

Otherwise, my significant other and I have already discussed that we aren't going to have a TV in the bedroom just because it's a distraction from everything else that should happen in a bedroom. We'll probably have a TV room for all the snuggling during a movie moments.

Yep, but I rarely use it. And then it's usually for porn movies I need to review. I use to have cable and a DVR box, but we couldn't afford it after a time. :-(

Yep, just about every room in the house has a TV expect the kitchen, dinning room, and the bathrooms of course.

Yes but it rarely gets used. The big screen HD tv contraption is in the living room.

I've never had a TV in my room. Growing up, my parents didn't want me to lock myself in my room all self-sustained with TV, phone, computer... only to come out for food
Now, I just don't see it as necessary. I barely watch TV, and when I do want to, I can usually watch via internet on my laptop. TV is also a major distraction. And I DON'T need anything more to distract me from school work, heh.

When I was a kid I slept in the living room just so I could watch TV until I passed out. After a while I started to need it to fall asleep. I worked to get over that, though, and now I haven't watched any TV in about a year. My boyfriend doesn't either, which helped a lot in the beginning.

No TV in the bedroom. I don't even have cable, and we use a computer to watch 95% of our TV shows and movies. The computers don't live in the bedroom, though, because sometimes one of us is tired and the other wants to stay up and use the computer and we don't want to keep each other awake. If I really wanted to watch something in bed, I could bring my laptop in there. If I have a tough time falling asleep or I need to drown out neighbors, I play classical music on headphones or turn on a fan for white noise.

We use the TV to mask the sound of our sexual encounters - and when I'm traveling my wife falls asleep watching TV.

I HAVE to have the TV on to fall asleep. And oddly it has to be something I am very familar with...IE: A movie I know well, or a sitcom I have seen in reruns. My husband makes fun of me for this but I like to be able to roll onto my side and still kind of follow the show in my head while it lulls me to sleep. I know I know, it is odd but it helps me fall asleep, otherwise I just lie there with millions of thoughts running through my head. In a way the TV helps "turn off" my brain.

Absolutely not. We lead crazy busy lives, and I try to make our bedroom into something of a sanctuary-- sleep and sex only. Don't get me wrong, I definitely love my TV, but I don't need constant background noise.

You hit my reasoning right on the spot. I live in an apartment building with 3 floors. I'm on the second. A giant lives above me. If I don't have the TV on with the sleep-timer, I'll never go to sleep. But if I forget the sleep-timer, I'll wake up at like 4am because it bothers me.
