Ladies: Are You One of the Guys?

Contributor: Ansley Ansley
I'm curious about the number of women who have been told by a significant other that they're "one of the guys". How does it make you feel?

More than once I've been told I'm "one of the guys." It's never really bothered me. It's nice because I've never felt pressure from any of my friends to be girly unless I want to. I'm encouraged to wear dresses and skirts if I want, and I'm encouraged to wear athletic shorts and torn jeans and work on the car if I want. I've been pretty fortunate in that I tend to walk the line between being one of the guys and being girly and I can jump back and forth most of the time.

I always become really giddy whenever my husband calls me one of the guys. It's like "YES, HE FEELS WE CAN RELATE TO EACH OTHER!!!" and I get all warm and fuzzy. I've done my fair share of working on cars and such and it was something I enjoyed but it's just not something I have to do anymore, so I don't. But, I'll never pass up an opportunity to get down and dirty with him on a project.

There's just one problem...I almost always manage to hurt myself, and in that regard he turns around and calls me his princess and marches me back to the couch. It's adorable.

I am only considered one of the guys! I know the most dirty jokes! Hahaha. I always tease my husband that he's my wife. I do most of the guy stuff around here; car maintenance, house repairs etc... I don't however cut the grass!

You're forgiven. I've had an itchy trigger finger lately, myself.

Lol, my husband pulls the same stuff! He knows a lot more about the cars than I do, so it's him standing over me while I'm doing the work, but I'm learning at the same time. The only thing I don't like about it is that it fucks my nails up sometimes lol.

I've been like this my entire life. I like being one of the guys. I enjoy when people talk to me not afraid to "censor" what they have to say or what they want to talk about. I always chuckle when one of the guy-friend's girlfriend comes into the room and the entire conversation shifts (even when they're NOT talking about her!).

I once helped my brother-in-law (at the time) change the clutch in my car. We got everything put back together and the car wouldn't start. So, I sat down on the curb and started flipping through the wiring diagrams. There was only ONE black and white wire in the entire scheme and guess what part it went to? Go on, guess...

The starter solenoid. That SOB fought me for hours on it and I finally took the keys and went upstairs to shower. The next day, I sneaked back down, put it together, started the car and drove away. I got about fifteen miles down the road when I heard this LOUD noise coming from the front of the car and it wasn't shifting correctly. Then BAM! Car stops. I was able to pull it to the side of the road and a guy comes barreling out of his house thinking little ol' me dropped my transmission by shifting wrong. NOPE!

My idiot BIL used anti-seize to work a bolt back into the motor mount and my engine fell two inches and snapped one of the mounts in half. He was never allowed to touch another vehicle I owned ever again.

I used to worry about my nails and then I just started keeping them really short. They're thin and very brittle to begin with and razor sharp to boot, so hubs would prefer I didn't keep them long anyway.

I don't think I've ever had anyone shift lines of conversation unless they were specifically talking about me. I'll talk about anything with just about anyone. There was a couple we liked to hang out with back in the day and I do remember conversations being on the vapid side of things so as not to overwhelm her. I always thought it was silly, until I actually had to talk to her by myself. It was excruciating. She was all Valley, all the time.

I was back in high school. I was the only girl RPG'er in the group, but they overlooked that (surprisingly, but then I was considered fat and ugly so I was 'safe'). The problem was that I was the one who got annoyed by their 'measuring stick' antics and girl-ogling right in my presence; they kept forgetting I was a real girl and had standards.

I prefer being a girl and don't feel the need to compete with the guys. I mean, I can take care of my car on the minor stuff (the most I ever did was change the heater blower in my old Corsica) and can push a lawnmower and move furniture and am into geeky things ... but I drink, hit, and play like a girl, and know next to nothing about sports. Master is fine with it.

Yeah, I suck in the sports department and I don't like first person shooters, but I adore RPG's. I'm trying to get into baseball and football is about to start up so I need to learn a few things there. I'm more into the baseball thing than football, though.

Most of my friends are guys and they always consider me one of the guys although I dress feminine around them. I feel like guys are much more low key than girls and I like that.

I have 'girl-bro' status with most of my male friends, and my Master definitely treats me like one of the guys when we are out in public. I love it, personally.

My nails aren't terribly long, but they're long enough to break lol. I don't blame you for never letting your BIL touch a car of yours again, I wouldn't either. Fun fact for you, nail polish works pretty much exactly the same as threadlock for sealing bolts into place. My husband taught me that the other day

Ooooh good deal! Thanks for that! I use clear nail polish to seal the knots on my beadwork, so that makes sense. Geez, now I miss doing this kind of stuff. Since we live in an apartment complex we aren't allowed to work on vehicles on the property and with an almost brand-new vehicle we have free maintenance at the dealership. I do occasionally get to fix my unruly vacuum cleaner and unclog the shower drain sometimes. LOL
