Lose Weight or Tone Muscles?

Contributor: js250 js250
After talking to a couple people this weekend about their recent commitment to losing weight I started to wonder about the huge difference in our opinions. I feel the pounds you weigh are a number on a scale but when your muscles are toned up and in shape you can see where your body looks right. My friends had a target number and are depriving themselves of necessary calories to burn while working out. They work out for the weight loss--not for the muscular toning....

--Which one is most important to you--your weight or muscle tone?
--Why do you feel that way?

Lose fat and tone muscles, even if it means maintaining or even gaining weight. According to my BMI I am barely normal, leaning towards underweight. But I do have fat, plenty of it. But fat is lighter than muscles, so I don't weight a lot.

I feel like it really depends on your goal! I bulk up SUPER easily, so cardio, dieting, and like... Not moving, all help me to slim down. At the same time, there are certain areas that I LIKE bulking up, like my calves and arms, so I do try and work those out.

I would much rather tone my body than lose weight. I don't care what the scale says, quite frankly - if I weighed 200lbs but was completely toned with zero cellulite or saggy skin, I would be perfectly happy. All it would mean was that people would be surprised as heck when they tried to pick me up!

Both here. Once I get back on track I have a lot of both to do. I'm not shooting for a specific number on the scale, though I would like for my BFP to be within a certain range.

I'm working hard at losing the weight first. Once I weigh less, my body won't hurt as much when I work out. I'm down 20 lbs, my first goal weight is another 20 lbs from now, the follow goal will be 50 lbs from there, and my ultimate goal is about 100 lbs away. Once I lose the next 70 lbs, I won't be as focused on the weight, I'll be working hard to get my body to be as strong as it can be. So if that means I never lose the last 20 lbs, I won't be upset.

I feel like muscle tone is more important. I feel better when everything is firm and healthy and really don't put too much stock into my weight.

Muscle tone is more important to me. However, I can understand that for certain people, such as those who are obese, may focus on losing weight first. In the end though, I think a nice toned body is more attractive and healthier than a body that resembles a fragile twig.

I think both are important to maintaining a healthy body. I eat a healthy diet to lose fat and I work out to build muscle.

I am actually rather toned under the fat - the stretching in yoga actually builds muscle much more efficiently than using weights. However, I am going to have to up the ante with some sort of cardio to get rid of the excess fat - I'm not as flexible as I can be because the fat is in the way.

Both - lose weight and tone muscles at the same time - saggy skin after a weight loss isn't very appetizing.

Congratulations! Keep working at it. Losing weight can take months so don't get discouraged.

To answer the original question, I am more into tone than weight. Well more like I am into being agile and quick and good stamina. What good are huge muscles if you can't bend.

Definitely prefer to tone muscles. I work on toning because I want some muscles since I'm a weakling. Lol And because I don't feel I need to lose weight necessarily, but they can use some toning up.

Toning muscles is the most important aspect. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even at rest. Toning will actually put you on a shorter track to weight loss/getting to your goal size than endless calorie cutting will.

Muscle toning is more important to me. However, my real answer is secret option number three, being healthy! I hardly go on the scale. I work on daily and base how I feel on my health reports from the doctor and how I feel.
