Thinking about how much has changed since even I was a kid, I figure all of us here are old enough that when we were kids, discipline was more... hands-on that what's allowed today, so I wanted to ask others what methods of discipline did your own parents use? Which were effective?

I don't remember a lot of physical disclipline growing up, but my sister got that a lot more than I ever did. I remember twice getting a belt, but I don't remember much other physical punishment besides little discreet pinches to the arm when my mom wanted me to be quiet in public or something, but not painful ones. I also remember my mom making us look up new words in a dictionary once or twice when we used the word "duh!" Lol.

I don't remember getting time outs myself and definitely no hickories or tree limbs or other objects like fly swats for spanking. Ouch! I did see my cousin get the fly swat once when we were kids. The majority of my punishments were groundings. You?

My mum used to tell us off, ground us, take things away. Her final resort would be a light smack to the bum or thighs. We would instantly stop. Never really hurt and I would do the same to my children.

There was only ONE time my mom ever slapped me in the face...then she kicked me out of the car and told me to walk home. I was like...11. A terrifying moment for an 11 year old. She only got about 2 blocks away before she turned around and picked me up again. That's what happens when your mom is undiagnosed with bipolar disorder...

We got our asses kicked. Sometimes we deserved it, sometimes we didn't. My mom would have the "guilty until proven innocent," philosophy, and it sucked.

I do think some kids need a swift kick in the ass now and then though.

When I was really young, my punishment was a time out. My real punishment was that my mom had a way of making me feel really guilty about doing anything wrong, usually without having to say a word. That is the lesson that has really stuck with me.

It was usually just time out, or for longer punishment, no tv or no desert for a day/week. My mom spanked me once and felt awful about it. Violence is no way to raise children.

We got a spanking when little, but we figured it out really quickly, so I only got spanked twice. I got my mouth washed out with soap at 4, for swearing. I was just repeating something I heard, but I was doing it in anger when something wasn't going my way & I repeated it when asked, "What did you say?". I also was slapped in the face by my mom once in high school for a "smart mouth", but in no way deserved it. I was never grounded.

None of these were necessary. It's better to find ways to correct behavior without getting physical.

We got serious spankings, face swats..etc.

When [parenting my own child, she got two spankings--these were for extremely serious offenses--playing in the highway and getting in the gun cabinet in my room. Otherwise, it was time out and taking away cherished items or events for a specific time period. Mostly, she was very good, rarely needed discipline and 'the look' would suffice, lol!! (Had her fooled!!!)

I was only spanked once, but I remember putting my nose in the corner and being grounded. I also remember my mother trying to squeeze my cheeks so they would touch in the middle!

I was spanked...a lot, mainly with a belt. I never listened. Time outs were frequent (I hated it when they would bust out a penny to hold to the wall with my nose), things taken away, soap in the mouth, grounded, chores. Mainly spankings though. My mom had less patience than my dad. Eventually my dad promised to never spank me again, and he held to his word. Mom on the other hand was and is a bit of a loose cannon. My dad would try and talk to me. I'd still act out, only not as much.

My two brothers and I got ALL the spankings lol. Usually with the hand, but sometimes with the belt. When we got older, Dad switched to sentences. Oh god the sentences! I think the most I ever had to write was 500 3-line sentences, but my brother had to do 2000 once.
