Noise and reading/studying

Contributor: Zombirella Zombirella
Can you read and/or study with other distractions going on?
If I'm trying to concentrate on something important or that I'm trying to process and understand it has to QUIET. Even the noise of the traffic outside the window bothers me at times.

Other, it depends on how I'm feeling, really.

Sometimes I want no sound, sometimes I want music, sometimes a certain kind of music, et cetera.

I can't have any noise except, say, soft music I'm playing myself.

It depends on what I am doing, when I am doing it, and what sort of noise it is.

If it's talking or something like that it does, but otherwise no.

TV with sound / talk radio / people having a conversation will really mess me up. Most other sounds just turn into white noise after a while.

Not only does noise not bother me but I study better when there is something like heavy metal music on. I am an odd person when it comes to studying.

when i had to study, i would put in my headphones & play white noise (like the sound of static or something). it's supposed to help you remember the things that you read & go over better, & it always worked for me. the times that i did use white noise, i was always able to remember what i had studied a lot better than the times that i didn't use it.

Only a few things really bother me, like talking. I can ignore every other noise but actual people in the same room as me talking... I feel like i should keep one ear open when they're talking, and it distracts me.

Only repetitive noises bother me. TV and stuff doesn't but I do prefer to study in silence

I can read and listen to mellow music, but there are some things that require a more in depth concentration and I prefer quiet.

Usually I concentrate better with a movie or a CD on in the background, but it has to be something familiar. Nothing I've never seen/heard before, or else I get distracted. I don't like sudden noises (like when my roommates start screaming at 3 am for some unknown reason), but I'm okay with most background noise.

I can handle music, but the kids screaming or a loud TV is bothersome.

Only certain background noises like annoying douchebag roomates, noisy brats, and terrible music tend to screw up my concentration...Ah, the numerous arguments I've had because of those reasons.

This all depends on what I'm reading or studying. If I'm reading a textbook, I need it to be silent. If I'm creating a study guide or writing notecards, I like to have the TV on with a show I've seen a lot. When I'm watching something I've seen many times before, I don't have to focus on it to understand it but it creates relaxing white noise.

I don't like studying or reading in complete silence. I'll need some kind of background music or noise keeping parts of my brain occupied so the rest of it can focus. I prefer music that's arrhythmic and has a consistent beat and has minimal lyrics, or lyrics that I can tune out from lack of comprehension (another language, normally) or from familiarity. Songs that are like techno, trance, electronica, house, dance, industrial, tango, and recently electroswing all work to keep me focused. Classical and any rhythmic, complicated music is a distraction because I'll get caught up focusing on the song and not my studies. If I don't have music available, I'll end up with a section of a song repeating on loop in my head to keep my thoughts calm (even now, I don't have any music on but I have Parov Stelar's Catgroove stuck in my head). TV/radio/other people are a distraction, as is any kind of music that I'm emotionally invested or attached too (no Sherlock soundrack music, as awesome as it is, is allowed on my study playlist because I'll get distracted by it).

I much prefer silence, but I couldn't have survived college in Manhattan if I wasn't able to deal with a bit of noise.
