Make punch if it's a party; it doesn't HAVE to be alcoholic. Then have water, maybe ice tea. I'd only bother with sodas you wouldn't normally drink if it's casual or if there are kids. Otherwise, it's a waste of money when most adults will be willing to try punch or just do water. I mean, they are trusting you to make the food...

Our parties usually have water, a dark soda, diet soda, and a clear soda, a juice/lemonade/iced tea/whatever, and then any alcohol if we decide. It also depends on the size of the party too. If there's only 10 of us then I'd get drinks that my family would drink if there were anything left. If there's a lot of people I'd get a larger assortment of things.

Don't forget bottled water! I don't drink alcohol, and I don't really like pop that much. So, I always hope people will have cold water in bottles at parties. (I am not fond of tap water, it always tastes weird to me.)

Also, make sure you have NON-diet pop. I have been to so many parties where the only thing to drink was booze, diet pop or sink water. BLEH. Those of us who don't drink diet pop are stuck. I have actually gone into my car (where I always keep bottled water) for a bottle of water when I have been at people's houses who never have regular pop or bottled water. Make sure there is something for everyone.

I have to disagree with MaryExy (sorry) I absolutely detest any sort of punch. I like my pop straight up if there is no water. With punch, those of us with allergies or who do not drink never know what is in it (sherbet has dairy in it) and avoid it for that reason, too.

Thank you for asking.
