Olympic Badminton Scandal...

Contributor: Ganconagh Ganconagh
Four women’s doubles teams were found to have intentionally tried to lose their matches, apparently because they had determined that a loss would allow them to play a weaker opponent in the next round. The teams have been disqualified.

What do you think about this?

I'm appalled, they should be barred from international competition.

No big deal, if you aren't cheating, you aren't trying hard enough.
Why the hell is badminton even an Olympic event?

The only goal in their minds were to win Gold for their country, being disqualified is already a big blow to them, I hope they've learned their lesson.

I don't know whether you've tried proper indoor badminton before, it is a really fast racquet sport, you can be huffing, puffing and sweating after being in a match for 30 minutes. Too bad it's not a popular sport in the States, that is one of the two sports I was crazy about.

I'm really disappointed that these teams attempted to do this, however I also think there's a problem with the rules if this 'strategy' is even possible.

What do ... more
I wish there is an "other" option. I think the rules simply need to be changed. If they have better chance to win the gold medal through losing, then there's truly something wrong with the rules here. It's really not the athletes fault, and they really weren't cheating. There's nothing wrong with trying to work the system. In a way, we all are, everyday.

I just can't get behind that line of thinking. If you're manipulating the system in your favor by not performing at your best in order to advance that defeats the entire purpose of the Olympics in the first place.

Just because you find a loophole doesn't mean you should take it, and I think that applies to all areas of life.

I'm so disappointed w/ the direction the Olympics have gone - today's version doesn't even compare to the original intention - too bad - I protest professional athletes competing in the games i.e. Basketball, Baseball, etc...

I don't see it this way. Every person is responsible for their choices. Nobody "makes" us make a choice. They can influence us, but they don't have the power to "make" us choose.

Each of those athletes are responsible for their choices in the games. They knew the rules and intentionally broke them - doesn't matter what the reason is.

The Olympic games need to return to what they were originally all about.

I find it funny that they felt the need to cheat.

The new setup was stupid. It was an incentive to lose.
