"Six-time Grammy Award-winning singer and actress Whitney Houston has died at age 48, on Saturday.

"Unfortunately it is true," a family spokesman said to Reuters.

Celebrity website TMZ.com reported Houston was found dead at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. This detail has not been confirmed.

The six-time Grammy Award-winning singer and actress set multiple music records and sold more than 200 albums worldwide.

Her career skyrocketed during the 1980-90s with back-to-back No. 1 hits including the single "I Will Always Love You," from the soundtrack of her feature film The Bodyguard.

Houston became one of the most celebrated female singers of all time, earning multiple Emmy and Billboard Music awards, in addition to her Grammys.

Details surrounding her death have not yet been released.

Houston is survived by her daughter Bobbi Kristina."

She had an amazing voice, but will most likely be remembered for her marriage and drug habits. We lost an amazing singer.

This is very difficult to take. She was and still is an idol for many people. I send my regrets and condolences to the family. She was definitely a very lovely woman and singer. She will be missed but not forgotten.

I mourned the loss of Whitney over a decade ago, but to have it become a reality is eye-opening. You just never know if tomorrow will be there. I always hoped she'd be able to get it together; trying to kick an addiction is the hardest thing a person can ever go through.

I am very sad over this news. I feel very badly for her young daughter who is left without a mom. Also for her friends and family. Death is always hardest on those left behind.

I wish people would remember Whitney Houston for the good things she did in her life and not her mistakes. She had a great voice and accomplished a lot.

I did as well, only a bit earlier. She was lost to us long before this.

But it's still sad when it formally happens.

I don't understand why she is more important than anyone else who loses their battle with addiction. Or why she deserves more recognition than the 16-year old at my friend's daughter's school who was murdered by his stepfather? Why is her life so much more important?
