Are you scared of the dark? (Even a little bit)?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
We were discussing "hard wired" fear. I think as mammals we have a natural fear of the dark (a get into the cave before dark so something that DOES see well at night doesn't eat you) hold over.

My hubby has WORKED in the dark, so he thinks it is silly.

I still claim that even with working in the dark, when you first enter an unfamiliar dark room, basement or go out in pitch black, you get a little tiny fear chill in your spine.

What does the EF family have to say? Are you even the tiniest bit scared of the dark (or VERY scared, for that matter????)

Huuuge scaredy cat when it comes to darkness... I still have a nightlight and I'm not ashamed of it, either.

It's more the unfamiliarity (or lack of good knowledge) than the dark. I used to walk by a cemetery every night at dark (with a flash light). The first few times it was scary, after that, meh, I knew what was there.

I am not afraid of the dark itself, I am afraid of what could be lurking in the dark. I had a bad experience when I was a teen, someone came to my window. I know they were probably just trying to get me to sneak out but it scare the CRAP out of me. To this day at night I can not have the windows uncovered for any reason.

The dark doesn't bother me - at least not while inside. If outside in the dark, it's another story cause I live in the pitch black country and ya never know what ya might step on ... including King Brown snakes and dingoes.

I like it pitch black in my room at night. However if I'm sleeping alone I like to leave a light on in another room in case I have to get up at night.

Only if I'm already worked up about something...a noise or something I read/saw.

Very. In fact, it's something I'm working on in therapy. So yeah, it's pretty bad...

I'm terrified of cave-dark, or any dark that is dark enough I can't tell how big the room I'm in is. I'm claustrophobic, so they play into each other. Other than that, the only time I'm afraid of the dark is during the fall in bear-infested areas. I don't like bears.

if i'm alone, then the dark makes me very nervous. when i'm the only one at my apartment, i have to sleep w/ a night light. if i'm w/ people, i'm usually ok, although sudden blackouts at night still startle the hell out of me whether i'm around other people or not.

Yes, if I'm walking around outside, if I'm in an unfamiliar place, or I'm home alone, I sometimes get scared.

I get nervous of the dark, unless I am in my own bed.

Not really. But where I live we have raccoons (we actually have a whole family, babies and all that hang on our porch at night!) and panthers which we hear often, etc. So if I'm having to walk all the way out to my car which is parked near the woods, I do get an extra pep in my steps! Lol. If I'm it's dark and we're leaving I don't mind. I don't love the dark, but it don't terrify me. My twin is absolutely horrified and so if our 12 year old!

I sleep with my bedroom lights on. I had this phase where each time I turned the light out my bulb would blow so I had to start leaving it on and then after weeks of that I cut it out and couldn't sleep! Lol. So I've been sleeping with it on for nearly a year now. Lol. I wondered if I could ever get used to sleeping in the dark again, but we recently took a trip to Panama and it did take me several nights to adjust to sleeping in total darkness.

It is at least an eerie feeling!

I'm not afraid of the dark, but I have nightlights on all over the house, I don't want to bump into something and get hurt.

Not really, no. However, I do have a very active imagination, which likes to conjure up things in the dark, which gets me a little scared. As for the actual darkness, then no.

I'm a little afraid of the dark. I don't have a problem in my own room if the door is shut, but it took a very long time to be able to sleep with the door open at all if the rest of the house is going to be dark. A new place in the dark is horrible for me, and I leave lights on until I get used to the place.

Hell yes! That's where the monsters are!

I'm not a fan of it, because when it's dark, I'm usually not wearing contact lenses, and I can't see anything.

not at all. My older son is for some reason, not sure why he is or how it started. We have night lights in every room, so he has some light. Plus it helps when we have to get up in the middle of the night to take care of a kid, we are not running into furniture.
