I'd be all about the wind-up clockwork rotator functions... I've actually looked into which blends of brass haven't got lead (but they're pretty pricey, at least if you haven't got a wholesale hookup, which I haven't got).

Movies that are in the genre are Wild Wild West (with Will Smith), Robot Carnival (anime), Van Helsing, Howl's Moving Castle (anime) ... damn it, my ex-husband took off with the GURPS 'Steampunk Sourcebook', which has a long list of Steampunk-inspired movies and novels.

I am heavily involved in the Steampunk scene and have been for a few years. I actually make a lot of my own stuff and learned to sew and work with leather because I wanted cool steampunk clothes and accessories.
The fun in steampunk is the DIY factor. Anyone looking for materials should check out Tim Holz's stuff, which can be found in most craft stores.
My favorite retailer for goggles is Brute Force Studios. They are expensive but so well made.
Brute Force Studios are also behind the Lady Clankington's steampunk sex toys, which was mentioned earlier in this thread. I actually met Lady Clankington at this year's Comic Con-she and she is just so lovely. Lady Clankington's sex toys were initially a one-off and the site was set up as a joke but once they started to get orders they expanded the business.

I'm just laughing at the idea of a steam-powered vibrator. Boy would that be noisy! Or, maybe a vibrator that is clear with brass and gold gears inside it! That would look cool.
