Thinking about getting a tattoo never had one...

Contributor: kinky girlfriend kinky girlfriend
ok one side of me things tattoos are cool and sexy and I'd like to experience getting one and it would be a rush maybe becaue its something i've never done and its not like me at alll because well i've never had one and idk how to explain it... another side of me thinks they are pointless dumb and it's like why would you put a tattoo of a close one who passed thats what visiting a grave is for or looking at pictures of them..or why put a rose its like thats what artwork for your walls are for or real flowers.. actually go out and pick up a rose and smell it or instead of pretty stars, hearts and butterflies go draw a picture go find somethin you really like and put on your wall or even your desktop background...lol IDK but you get my point. Well I can't decide if I want to stay tattoo less forever or go get one..RRRR It's like my heart is racing I'm stuck (its not racing but u get the picture)

What about a heart with 2 butterflies on each side? so far thas all I got..but I don't want anything on my legs or ankle, but wrist, foot, back and maybe "tramp stamp" are ok with me..where do you think somethin like that looks best?

There is a girl I work with whose been doing lots of people's tattoos latly..she isn't a professional but people just pay her watever and she does them..of course I would make sure everything is safe and sanitary I'd probly even go buy my own ink and needle for her to use...but I do have an email a co worker sent me of the tattoo she just had finished if you wish to see it I'll need your email address and forward it...I couldn't see the pic well because my computer keeps trying to open everything on NERO and I never bought it after the trial ran out so I can't open pics and see them just wats on the email...

First of all, I would suggest that you be absolutely sure you want a tattoo before you get one. If you don't absolutely positively want one, then you probably shouldn't.

Secondly, when you do decide to get one, I would get it from a licensed artist, not a friend that does them on the side for fun. But that's just my opinion.

If you are unsure, maybe you could try henna first and get an idea if you like having a tattoo? Just a thought.

Okay, first things first: do NOT get a tattoo just for the sake of having one. In 10 years you aren't going to like it and wish you hadn't gotten one. It sounds as if you have not put very much thought into this yet. Wait until you are CERTAIN you want something on your body for the rest of your life. After you've decided that, draw up a few sketches of what you think you want (or have someone draw them up for you) and then WAIT at least 6 months to a year. See if you still like it after waiting for a while.

DO NOT GET A TATTOO FROM A NON-PROFESSIONAL. I don't care if you go buy your own ink and needle--it is neither safe nor sanitary. There is a reason why people have to go through special schooling/training to do tattoos for a living!

Tattoos can change dramatically in 10 years depending on how well they were done to begin with. I have a few that are about the same age that look completely different now because they were done by different artists with different skill levels. Trust me, your mind will change eventually if you go into it with the mindset of 'who cares what I think in 10 years'. Different inks age differently, and lines change with age.

A good rule of thumb that I've seen is not to go through with it until you've had a design set and wanted the same design for anywhere between 1 and 5 years. I know people who are waiting out their 5 years and haven't changed the design yet, but others who decided to wait just one year and changed the design and idea quite a few times before that time frame was up.

I definitely understand wanting to save money by using a friend who does it on the side for fun, but you get what you pay for.

You may think now that you won't care what it looks like in 10 years, but trust me, you will. I have a few now that while I still enjoy having them, I would change something about them because I didn't wait as long as I should have before I got them done.

My own, personal opinion is that tattoos should have some sort of meaning to you. It shouldn't just be something to get because you want to run out and get one. I put a lot of thought into what to get since it is on my body forever. The meaning could be something as small getting an octopus because it's your favorite animal and they're pretty awesome (what my next one might be, if and when it ever happens) or it could be something in memory of someone who passed away. You need to keep in mind that it will be there forever. When you're 90 years old will it still potentially be something that has meaning to your or will it at least be something you won't regret?

Also, please don't have a friend who does tattoos for fun do it. Go somewhere and get it professionally done. Sure, it will cost more but trust me, it will be worth it for a wealth of reasons.

I would never get a tattoo of something because it looks pretty. I only get tattoos that have personal symbolism. I want to love my tattoos since I choose to live with them for the rest of my life; for me, they are a permanent decision. And I would advise you to do the same.

And, I would do some more research before you get a tattoo done from a coworker. You need to see a portfolio and where she does her tattoos and definitely check to see if your coworker has a license. Other than that, I would just get it done in a professional shop where they are experienced and sanitary (only some are, unfortunately).

DON'T get it from a friend. That is the worst mistake you could make.

Go to a reputable shop. Ask around. Call around for estimates.

And don't just pick something on a whim because it is cute. In a yea you will regret it.

I have 5 tattoos ATM. They are all in very inconspicuous spots that can be hidden for work and formal functions.
