Tips for training a dog to quit barking?

Contributor: Taylor Taylor
I have a small dog (a pekingese) whose favorite hobby is barking. I was hoping some of you guys might have some tips since I know a lot of you are animal lovers. I've tried taking her on longer walks because I had heard sometimes having too much energy can make them bark, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

My neighbors have started complaining, and I really don't want to get rid of her, but I don't want more trouble with my neighbors either.

I've thought about getting one of those collars that is supposed to help with barking, but I don't know, they seem mean. Has anyone tried them?

Here is a great article that pretty much summarizes what I was going to say.

When you try out the methods from Annemarie's article, remember that you have to be in a 'calm' state of mind also!

I have a shitzoo/pom mix that barks constantly. We squirt her with the hose or a squirt bottle when she barks. I also bought a shock collar for her when she is home alone. She did however learn what vocal volume she can bark at and not get shocked (it is quiet enough to not annoy the neighbor). Nothing else that we tried worked for her.

We tried the one that beeps and it worked for a few months until she realized it wouldnt hurt her.

It cant hurt for you to try one.
