To paint or not to paint...that is the question.

Contributor: Rod Ronald Rod Ronald
Okay look, we have been painting our new house for a few days now. What started off as a kinda fun project has turned into hell of freaking earth!
There's mistakes and streaks and blah blah blah!!!!
It's driving me nuts! The touch ups alone take all day!
So my question is this, would you paint your home yourself or hire someone to do it for you?

No way in hell would I paint a house. That sounds like a royal pain. Hire someone all the way.

Painting is a pain in the but. I would hire someone to to it for me. I used to help people do this long time ago. I sure did not have fun especially when it has to be done a certain way so you don't get streaks or mistakes. Try to look into a company who would not rob you blind.

I'm going to post a picture here soon because it's f'n crazy! The molding, the base boards, the walls. The f'n paint wasn't matched right at Lowes, so now we have to go back and get the right match, if they don't f it up again. I painted "kill me now" on the wall, and the shit bleed through the over coat! I need some whiskey!

LOL!!! You should keep the "kill me now" on there. That would be hilarious.

We paint inside all the time. Outside I wouldn't do. Is your paint old? Not mixing it well enough?

If it was a room or two, I would do it myself. If it was the entire house, I'd hire someone to do it for me (plus it would get done faster).

We could do it ourselves, but I don't know that we would. It depends on how much time we had.

I could paint my own house.

I'm voting for the unicorn... however, I think if it was a team effort and you had several people helping, it wouldn't be AS MUCH of a pain in the ass.

I have painted alot of houses in my life time. When I purchased our house, I also went out and purchased a paint sprayer to paint the house. Not on of those hand held units, I picked out a nice $500 sprayer. I resided my house and painted it, but did not like the sheen we had picked out and repainted it again in a shinier sheen. I have also painted my dads house and helped a few friends with their houses.

It cost too much to hire someone to do a job that you can do your self. And for those of you that think hiring someone will result in a perfect job, it does not. I can go to any house and pick apart the job and point out things that were done wrong.

Hang in there Ron, you will get her done.

I could and would most likely paint my own house. As long as you invest in the right materials/tools to get it done it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Unless of course those folks at the paint store f*up the mix, that's just down right ridiculous but one of those things that happens from time to time.

Keep at it Ron! Perseverance is key

I would get tons of friends to come over and help me paint, sort of like a painting party!

Are we talking inside the house or out? Either way I would get friends together and throw a BBQ afterwards!

I love the cost savings of painting myself but every time I do it halfway through I wish I would have just hired someone.

Are you talking about inside or outside??? If it is outside, you may have adhesion problems. If inside, your prep work may be bad, or you are just not using a good paint or the right applicator. Some jobs call for a cheap "chip brush" and others for expensive horse hair. Some jobs need a roller and others a sprayer. Have you checked with a real paint store (not a big box store...but a paint store) for advice? You may be making life far more difficult then it needs to be. If all else fails, if you can afford a painter, they will come in and whip out the job in short order...it's what they do. Just use a recommended paint contractor in your area...with references.

Have we mentioned we are Scottish???? They don't come much cheaper. While Mr HATES painting, he hates spending money even more...we are actually in the very long process of painting our house a room at a time...hang in there.
