What age did you get your kid(s) a phone?

My oldest is almost 13!! I can't believe it.. In 6 months he will be a teenager! YIKES! Then i have my 11 year old and my 3 year old.
They want phones, but I have not decided to get them a phone up to this point because 1. I don't think they are responsible enough and 2. they are never alone to need a phone..

Now when they start playing sports or when they spend time alone I think they will need one.. a prepaid one! and preferably one that can only call a few select numbers..

I didn't get a phone until i was almost 18. matter of fact it was like a month before my birthday

At what age did you ( or will you) get your kiddos a phone?

I don't have kids, but I got my phone when I got to high school and needed it to arrange transportation after sports practices/games. It was the simplest phone available, I had a limited number of minutes, and I couldn't text from it. I pretty much only used it to call my parents or other relatives.

My oldest is 7. Barring any extenuating circumstances I won't consider it before 16..

This was a hard decision for us. My son got a trial phone at 11, as we were going out of town, he was traveling with sports, and it made sense. His trial ran out on his 12th birthday, and we did add him to our plan. He does play sports, has practices, and will be traveling out of town more this year than last year, and he's been fairly responsible with it so far (but, I will say, if you get your kid a phone, make sure to get a limit on the number of text messages!)

Oddly enough, I didn't even want a phone. My mom made me get one when I went to a medical/ leadership conference thing when I was 13 or so.

My son is almost 15 and he has had a phone off and on for a few years now. We get him prepaid phones but, it depends on finances for minutes.

My husband and I got my oldest a phone when she turned 15. She could only use it to call us when she was out or 911 in case of an emergency. She later was aloud to text with the condition that she was not to bully or cause any trouble doing so. She has always been responsible when it came to the home phone or a cell phone. We taught her when she called someone she was to give her name and then ask to speak to whomever she needed to speak with. She also told her friends to do the same. We only aloud her the privilege of owning a cell because she has always been very mature when it come to phone etequette.
