Over here, Coke has always specifically been called Coke.

I'm curious - where on earth did the word 'pop' come from?
From "Soda Pop." Probably early 20th century, but could be earlier. The bubbles "pop" when you drink it.

Most Chicagoans, Illinois-ians and other Midwesterners use this term. I know no one here who calls it "Soda." Although some people from Downstate (which is getting close to "The South" call it "Coke.")

Thanks for the info! I love the conclusion of this study. People who say "Pop" are much, much cooler.

Where I grew up (Northern Midwest) we called it pop. But as I aged, I began calling it soda. I'm not sure what terminology Texans normally use as I mostly hang around military.

I think it's a midwest thing to call it 'pop', although I'm not sure about the regional specifics. When I lived in Colorado (the flat part), it was 'pop' but when I lived in California, Virginia, and North Carolina, it was called 'soda'.

I didn't know that. How do you determine still drinks from bubbly ones?

In most of the USA, they are only called "Soft Drinks" on restaurant menus, and that includes iced tea, lemonade as well as pop. Basically, anything that isn't alcohol or milk is considered a Soft Drink in the USA. But, people don't often used the term. We reserve "Pop" "Soda" "Coke" etc for bubbly non-alcoholic drinks.

I've from the East Coast, so it's soda. I was slightly confused when my boy friend's family in Michigan asked me if I'd like some pop.

"What kind?"

"Er...Coca Cola flavored Coke?"

I'm from New England, it's all soda to me.

Soda or Coke. But I'm from Atlanta, and it's all coke there. I do say soda too.

But everyone here calls it pop. It's annoying. They even label the grocery aisle "pop"

I picked both Soda and Pop because I basically call it both. Ever since I knew what pop was, I called it pop. I lived in Colorado and Michigan, and people all over those states seemed to refer to those drinks as pop. I then moved to Texas, and here it is strictly soda. I walked into a large roadside gas station asking where the "pops" were, and I got asked to leave because they assumed I meant some sort of drug. I have met several people who call it "seltzer" as well. I find that hilarious.

I'm from Canada and it's pop if it's general, and brand name if it's specific. If you ask for a Coke, you get Coke.

Only the bubbly drinks (apart from sparkling apple/grape juices - whether alcoholic or not) here are called soft drink. As a kid, I use to call them fizzy drinks.
Other drinks are just called by the name ... iced tea is called iced tea. Here, lemonade is usually bubbly. If it's not, then people would refer to it as non-fizzy lemonade.
