What do you do when you get sick

Contributor: SexyRayne SexyRayne
Just wanted to know about people different sick rituals. I currently have a respiratory infection (so does my hubby and 9 month old)! I had to get on meds where as my family didn't. I am asthmatic and mine could turn into pneumonia much easier.

I have a pretty severe spine condition, and several problems that stem from it...so when I get sick, I usually can't keep my medications down and have to hit the ER (spent last night/this morning there). If its not quite that severe, then I'll see whichever one of my specialists or my GP. thankfully, I almost never get sick with the flu or colds and the like, not sure I could tolerate those on top of my neuro-spine problems...

I don't go to the doctor if I'm sick unless it's something really bad or something that won't go away

Different things. I never go to the doctor if I'm sick. I suppose if I was severely sick and truly could use something the doctor had, I'd go. If I'm sick with a stupid cold or something I mostly have to suffer through it because ALL cold meds make me high! It's crazy, but any OTC cold meds make me outrageous and it's awful. I take BC powders if needed and that helps a lot. I can say, when I had a cold and was taking pain killers after having surgery, it made my breathing so much easier! Not sure what done it.

If I'm sick with stomach problems which for me is the worst kind, I take my prescribed meds for abdominal problems and won't eat for a day or two. Not much helps stomach problems, but if your nauseaus, things like sprite or pepto or immodium can be your BFF.

Sleep and have really weird dreams.

It depends on how sick I am. I haven't been to a doctor for being sick for quite a while. *knock on wood* I would certainly go if I felt it was serious enough. >.>

I just came down with a sinus infection Monday night, and I'm miserable! I have been taking sudafed and aspirin every 4 hours on the dot (otherwise I can't live). If it were something else I would head to the doctor. I hope you start feeling better!

Doctor, then bed & fluids. I have a compromised immune system so a common cold can become really serious really quickly for me.

Here are my ever working tips, which should be used so calmly ONLY when the case is some cold or flue or anything similar!

I stay in bed all day long, watching movies constantly, drinking LOTS of chamomile tea, relaxing, under a pile of blankets and receiving food in bed too, being totally served if possible!

The chamomile tea is to wash all the bad stuff out of your body, the LOTS of honey and lemon in it help you regain your endurance and give good nutrition, and of course you wanna put the NATURAL lemon juice in only when yer tea isn't as hot anymore, because Vitamin C burns above a pretty damned low heat!!!

The meals are pretty much that first rather soups, anything like that, hot and full of liquids, then as am getting better I eat more extremely filling food, which is always the sign of feeling better, and of getting close to being healed fully... The light, soupy food is to let your tummy rest, and the lots of CONSTANT liquids help in your digestion to wash the bad stuff out easier, then the good, filling food later gives you enough nutrition to recharge the energy in your body...

The being in bed all fully served and watching movies and relaxing is to let your body rest to heal easier, and the movies are to lead your attention away from any unpleasant feelings, like pain, fever or anything else... Fever btw is pushed down by anything soaked into cold water wrapped around your wrists, if it is a more serious fever then a wet cold towel around your body, in an even worse case cold shower or bath, and for the Night a very light kind of pill to keep yer fever down, like Kalmopyrin, a pretty harmless drug, but pretty much you go to bed with the wet fabric around your wrist, and if needed the towel around your torso too, a whole or a half Kalmopyrin depending on how sensitive you are when it comes to such chemical shit, and if you avoid such modern poisons then you will be fine with a much lower dose, and it is really for the hard Nights when you can't fall asleep because of feeling so horrible, or Algopyrin, one or a half, kicks in in 10-15 minutes, in my case it feels like being wrapped into some velvet in my whole body, pretty much takes away any pain, and as we know painkillers don't cure anything, just block the signals going into your brain telling you that hey, there's a problem, so it is aching somewhere, when you already know what's the problem and you can really barely sleep for the second Night only such a thing is acceptable, in really harsh cases some of those mixtures you can buy anywhere, though it must be a horrible cold when you need such a thing to be able to fall asleep! (And they are a higher dose of mixed stuff, definitely not something you wanna flood into yourself... ^^)
Also, another note on the temperature, the cold, wet fabrics will get warm in a short while, if the fever is still around you have to change em, and some Kalmopyrin (one in the day, two if really needed, AFTER OR WITH MEALS ONLY!!!) can help you sweat the bad stuff out too, though it is pretty much not needed, because let's say you had the cold shower, or held yer wrists under running cold water for a few to cool down, then you wrap yer wrists into the cold soaked stuff, get under a lot of blankets, sipping hot chamomile tea all day long, that will be plenty to cure you in a day or two, with all the relaxing and stuff, just beware because you will enjoy it so much with all those fine movies loaded only for your pleasure that you won't want to crawl out of bed and you will be all dizzy when you have to get up to go to pee or whatever! ~lol ^^

Pretty much that's it, if there is something else I look the symptoms up online and browse until I find what it may be, then do research about it too what kind of herbs heal it, mostly it is teas only so it's extremely easy to obtain them and cure yourself, I would go to a doctor if they cared about healing but they just stuff you with fuckin pills not helping a bit, just ruining you even more (respect to the exceptions), so I just try to deal with it on my own and with the Help and Knowledge of my Master, and if it is something what has to be seen by a doctor noted in the herb stuff too, then indeed, it is something so extremely serious that you have to go and just hope that the friggin doctor will do something useful, and not just stuff you with chemicals and take a lot of your money! ~sighs

Btw... No problems at all so far, looks like other than some cold once a year or twice and some rare dizziness when I haven't slept enough and haven't eaten yet are all what bad happens with me, nothing else really, or just something tiny and totally fixable with some tea, AND CHAMOMILE IS THE ULTIMATE HERB, you wanna look it up always if it can help you before you think about anything else, it is sooooooooooo versatile that there is barely anything it can't be used for, and a lot of other very common and much used herbs too, guess you will have to ask me to mention some if you are interested, before I ramble more!

It depends what kind of 'sick' I am. If it's just a cold or flu, I don't see the point in going to the Dr and infecting everyone else when I know the Dr is just going to say rest up. I hate it when people go to the Dr for a simple cold. It's not right that everyone else there ends up sick because they can't use common sense.

If it's more serious and I know I need some form of medication to bring my health back, then I go to the Dr.

It all depends on how bad it is. If its something just a cold or flu, Ill keep up fluids and get lots of rest. Tons of tea too. I take showers/baths once or twice a day to help with congestion and achy feelings.

If its something that turns into a resp. infection or something more serious, I go in. If its late at night, Ill go to the ER or urgent care. I usually try to just wait it out though. If it lasts for more than week, Ill go in.

I sleep, drink gatorade and eat eggo waffles (once they'll stay down).

Depends a lot on how bad it is, and just what the symptoms are. I usually just try to go through my day as normal if it's not too bad. Most things I just wait out, unless it's very severe (causing fainting spells, for example), or lasts more than a week or two. I'll go to the doctor if it gets that bad.

For a fever, I pop some ibuprofen or take a cool shower to bring down my temperature, and drink lots of cold fluids. I'm usually reluctant to sleep with a fever because I tend to hallucinate if I lay down and my temperature is even a smidgen too high. I've had times where a fever was so severe that I didn't even know where I was - NOT fun.

Nausea's a bit of a tougher call. I have chronic nausea (which I'm currently working with my doctor to figure out) and feel at least a little queasy most of the time. I have to look for other signs (more hallucinations, pinpoint stomach pain, feeling extremely cold) to figure out if how likely the chance of me actually vomiting is (and since I will go years between instances, the chances are usually low). If I think it's likely, I'll either stay in bed or drag a pillow and blanket into the bathroom so I have quick access to the commode.

i get something along the lines of a stomach virus once about every 5 or 6 yrs. when i get one, i just lay in bed all day, take motrin for the fever, drink gatorade or gingerale (depending on if i've thrown up yet or not), & then once i start feeling a little better, i eat chicken noodle soup & maybe a few saltine crackers. mostly i just sleep & hope i don't throw up again.

I usually keep going about my business until I'm forced (either by the sickness or my partner) to take some downtime. If I'm feeling crappy enough, I'll start really pushing the fluids and sleeping/resting more.
But I'm stubborn. I don't like taking time off and I don't like going to the doctor- especially since my doctor is an incompetent jackass who calls everything from the sniffles to pneumonia "the county crud", and says that there's nothing he can do to help speed up recovery.

I rest as much as I can, but with two small children and a husband who works long hours (sometimes days even), it's not always possible. I usually up the fliuds and take whatever OTC I can to relieve the symptoms.
