Because most of them are polytheistic. Gods, goddesses, spirits, etc.

No problem spelling out G-d. It is a respect for the name. I am not saying that "G-d" is proper name, but it shows a reverence for Him. Is a Jewish thing. I agree it is a good poll. I guess I felt that the lumping of the 1st option with the wack-jobs was a bit of a stretch and stacked the deck for bogus answeres. Thats all.

I chose that I was raised other because while I lived in a Christian house, religon was not something that was really pushed on me. Mom and dad took the approach of "if she wants to know we are here" but also didnt give me a "non-religous" enviroment. I now describe what I was raised with as a non-denomonational spiritual" rather then any one religon. I am now a Celtic tradition of pagan.

Parents raised me a southern baptist and I became a pagan. Pretty far wandering from my original start.

I was raised Jewish. My current religious ideas revolve around a mishmash of eastern and western religious ideologies.

wow - strong catholic representation here!

I myself was raised Lutheran and was a hardcore believe for two years or so in my teenage years. Now, however, I'm an atheist.

I was raised as several things - mainly as a male. I was raised in several branches of Christianity, though we adhered to none in particular. Primarily protestant, with a Catholic background, and also Jehovah's Witness, too. We collected religions. Gave them food and a good home.

Now, though, I'm pagan. More gods, but it's easier to discern the different branches.

raised agnostic, was a christian for a long time, and now I am neither agnostic or atheist, I guess I consider myself spiritual. I believe in the paranormal and a higher power, but it isn't God or Allah etc.

I was raised to believe we were Southern Baptist, but we did not act in accordance to any of the beliefs of the SB sect. Though they are a bunch of ignorant racist homophobes so I guess that counts!

I believe in a lot of things and manipulating energy is one of them.

I was raised by a fanatical southern baptist mother. She wasn't quite as bad the Westboro people, but she wasn't far from it.

I didn't fit in with the church from an early age, always asking questions and expecting logical answers. I have vivid memories from when I was in third grade or so, of Sunday school teachers looking at me like I was some sort of freak because of things I asked and the ways that I answered their questions.

Because I desperately wanted to please my mother, I maintained some sort of belief in Christianity up until High School, when I simply couldn't force myself to believe any more. I still faked belief for many years after that.

Nowadays, I don't believe in any form of organized religion, though I do have a sort of esoteric spiritual belief system that I created for myself. It's based on ideas from everything from Buddhism to quantum physics.

I was born into a Nazarene (Christian denomination) church, but most of my teen years were spent in a Southern Baptist church. I then attended a Southern Baptist university and realized I was really more of a Deist during my final year. I loved the English program I was in at my uni and the education I got there; but those years surrounded me with people who were anti-questions and fueling faith with fear instead of knowledge. I wanted real truth, so I went on my own search for myself, and I'm finally really happy with where I am now. I'm especially happy that I finally don't care that my beliefs, politics, etc are quite different from those of my friends and family, thus making it possible for me to embrace who I really am.

My man is Jewish so... who knows what's next on my plate.

BBW: How do you define fundamentalist? I was raised in a Bible-believing family and still subscribe to those beliefs....after some 'wandering.' I don't shove my beliefs in other people's faces, though. Is that fundamentalist? It seems like the term has developed a negative connotation, is why I'm asking.

I was raised Jewish, in a way. My parents were both very liberal about our upbringing, though, so they never shoved religion down our throats. I did not have a bar mitzvah. Now, I do not practice religion whatsoever. I prefer to not affiliate myself with religious groups, though I enjoy going to synagogues and churches for events, they're very lovely.

I was raised lightly Christian, and am now heavily into my Christianity! I pray every day and feel like someone's relationship with God is their own business. I feel that if the church welcomes drunkards into their house and hands out bowls of soup to the homeless, they can accept someone without condoning their lifestyle. I feel like praying for someone is a good way to change their heart, not picketing in their yard, handing out anti-whatever flyers, and making constant sermons against our fellow human beings.
Inform them of what the Bible says, then inform them of the context it says it in (almost as important as the text itself), and then let God talk to them from there.

I was raised in a different religion not mentioned, but kinda dropped away from it when I was around 15 because I hated the strictness of it.
I still believe a number of things, but don't wish to actually be a part of the church. I don't believe I must belong to any religion. What I believe and do is soley between God and myself - nothing to do with anyone else!

Raised Catholic turned out Atheist like half of the family. I stopped believing when I got into history of religion and saw the same myths, miracles and all recycled ad nausea by various religions, each of them claiming to be unique and true. Went to confirmation for my Mum. Since then I visited Church only once - for my friend's sister's wedding. What was said then just confirmed that this stuff can really dis-empower people and make them miserable. I thought that at least at your wedding you should get an uplifting sermon.

I define a fundamentalist as someone who takes the Bible very, very literally and who tries to follow it as closely to the OT as possible, almost forgetting how much grace and mercy is in the NT. Not only holding those standards for themselves but expecting EVERYONE to live up to those standards, whether they have faith or not, and who openly confronts everyone for not living up to them; and who feels like shaming someone into following is an acceptable way of comport.
