What's on when you work?

Contributor: El-Jaro El-Jaro
I MUST have something going on in the background when I work (music or tv). My significant other works best in COMPLETE silence.

What about the rest of the community?

I work from home with my kids around. If there is silence I know one of them is in trouble (or will be soon)

It depends on what I'm working on, really. When I'm writing, I need silence. When I am reading or doing homework, I need something in the background.

Has to be music. At work or at home we always have music playing. When I was in sales I visited many offices with no music, no pictures on the desk....creppy and makes employees feel like robots. Here there is music all over the building, all kinds.

Silence for studying (because I get distracted), but writing and other daily life things usually have my British comedies on in the background ... in fact, right now is 'Are You Being Served?' with the episode about the staff assuming that Young Mr. Grace is going to propose to Mrs. Slocoumbe.

The last place I worked at had huge signs posted around the clock-in station saying 'NO boomboxes, NO headphones, NO music of ANY kind'. Apparently, people weren't able to hear the boss yelling while listening to music, and she HATED to be ignored. With the amount of noise we had in that place (diner), I was surprised anyone was able to hear any music.

Definitely music! Or talk radio / radio program podcasts (yes, even This American Life). If I don't have music on, I have to hear my neighbor's horrible dog, construction around the neighborhood, noise coming from my husband's office and my kids arguing - so, yeah, music needed! My office is totally personalized too

I have to have something going. If there's nothing going on, my mind wanders and I spend all day tracking it down.

Depends, but usually something I am familiar with for the background. Like a movie I've seen a billion times, or a cd I played the death out of last year. Something that won't catch my ear.

A year ago I had to have something on, ether the radio or TV just something besides the buzz of welder's at work, or the neighbors noise while at home.
Know that I live in the country it's kinda a split between music or the sounds of nature.

I voted nothing but, in reality, there is a chorus of doggy voices, the Honey talking half the day and usually a t.v. blaring in the background.

I don't mind music, but TV is the biggest problem I have with focusing. It's something to do with the shows and the plotlines that completely distract me.

I almost always have something on in the background. Music, movies, or tv and almost always just on my second monitor since I rarely leave my desk. While I like being alone I don't really enjoy silence unless I'm the migraine witch from hell And then anyone even breathing within a 20 foot radius of me is going to die.

If I am sketching, painting, doing lab work that doesn't require counting, then whatever noise, as long as it's not blaring (like that drilling that's been going on right opposite my wall--wtf?!) is fine. However, if I doing anything that involves reading, writing, or counting, then it better be totally quiet or there will be TROUBLE.

I'm kinda the same way, which is why I haven't decided what I'm voting yet. Because sometimes I need absolute silence, but sometimes I have to have something in the background.

Which is why I can't have the TV on at all if I'm trying to get my fiance to do something. He tries to follow what I'm saying, but gets sucked into the TV so easily, lol

Ages ago when I lived in the dorms at college, I learned to focus and tune everything out when I was studying. I got to the point where I couldn't study in a library, because the silence drove me to distraction. I still have to have something on. Doesn't matter if it's loud or quiet, just so it's there so I can tune it out. Working, reading, anything really - I completely don't hear the noise until it goes away.

That's me too... I like a little "background noise." Alan likes quiet though, so I've had to adapt to working on reviews with nothing but us talking through them.

When I'm writing or reading, I often need complete silence. It allows me to better focus. I used to be able to listen to music and read/study/etc, but I haven't been able to do so in a good year or more. I blame the car accident my sweetie and I were in. My concentration hasn't been the same since.

Yeah, it really depends on the concentration requirements of the particular tasks I am juggling. I enjoy listening to jazz and horror scores when I need something on, but it can't be distracting. Other times I enjoy listening to world news. The news is usually way crazier than anything on TV.

I should consider getting a real radio soon. I do like listening to the BBC on the local NPR station.

NPR is great, and sometimes has the coolest most interesting pieces of all time on... however, it also has some of the worst stuff of all time as well. That early Saturday evening variety show, and Wire Tap both make me so angry.

I work from home with two little kids around. Cartoons or something is almost always on. Sometimes it's nice to have silence, depending on what I'm doing, but if the kids are down for a nap, and the cartoons are off, I'll often turn on some music.

I can never write reviews anywhere outside of my bedroom. My grandma keeps the television loud because, well, your hearing goes the older you get. I can't have any noise because the smallest thing can distract me from my train of thought. I've honestly tried to over come it and it's annoying when I can't.

As I work, we have the tv on, whether its tv show or a movie. I like (prefer) music too, but there are only tv's at work!! Watch mostly the Today show in a morning.
On the other hand, I like the sounds of nature! if im alone, i will listen to the sound of the animals instead

That would be awesome if we didn't literally write most of our reviews together. As in "No, give it here. I'll do that section!" or "That doesn't sound right, maybe we should say..." The Experience sections are usually the only places we break off on our own.

It's maddening sometimes, and there are days when we both envy the individual reviewers who write alone

I've become a total podcast addict so I listen to those a lot, at work, at the computer after my son is in bed, while I'm cleaning, they really help the time go by a bit faster. However if I'm in the mood for music or I really can't concentrate hard enough because I'm trying to focus too much on both tasks I'll switch to music.

When I'm at work - nothing!, because part of my job is listening to recorded conversations.
When I'm studying - a little sound is ok. Sometimes I even listen to Sweeney Todd or something during it.

When I'm at work- TVs that patient's have on in their rooms, other hospital workers, patients talking & of course various monitors beeping. When I'm studying- complete silence. When I'm cleaning the house, I have to have some music blaring!
