Penn and Teller did a Bullshit episode on BMI.

I think it's a total crock.

My BMI is on the low end of healthy, but I still have a way to go before being considered underweight. It can be fairly accurate, but I feel like it ignores a lot of other factors, such as muscle mass. Also, someone can be overweight and healthy, or underweight and healthy. So, it's a good guideline, but is only a guideline.

I have a "healthy" BMI but my sibling, who is much skinnier than I am but has built muscle, is technically overweight.

Also a guy who is 6'5" and over 210 lbs is overweight. This is bananas.

Things like BMI also allow health providers to stick to an antiquated version of what is healthy (I get better care as a skinny person who has crap dietary and exercise habits, and a fat person who eats well and exercises all the time is still fat and therefore Doing A Bad Job).

The system, it is not a good one.
