Who else is afraid of what others will do on 12/21/12?

Contributor: Chilipepper Chilipepper
My county just had a school lockdown because some asshole called a school and threatened them. I know the recent tragedy is going to spawn copycats, but with the upcoming so-called "End of the World"(tm) I am really fearing that the bugfuck crazies are going to be uber-active and maybe even try to take people with them since they think they have nothing to lose.

I'm not afraid of the end of the world, I'm afraid of what others will do about it.

I'm not too worried, but I do think some people will go crazy on Friday because they think the world will end. I'm probably going to stay in though, just in case

Guess I didn't consider that aspect...though not horribly concerned about it, truthfully.

Due to recent events, a school about 40 minutes from here has the same thing going on. Hubby works with a guy who had to go pick up his children early from school because someone called in a bomb threat. So, they had to go in lock down and call all the parents. Then...a 4th grader was arrested for telling the class that he would bring a gun to school and shoot everyone. WTF is wrong with the world?

Those who will do anything to be remembered - it was the motive behind Chapman's killing of John Lennon. And, honestly, look at how much attention the murderer is getting for having opened fired on a school. That 4th grader you mentioned wants attention, even if it's negative; he's made the connection on how he can get it. Though I suspect he doesn't quite grasp the finality of death.

I've often wondered which is worse: giving a kid a pet you know won't live very long so they can experience death or never allowing them to have pets at all.

I'm sure some people will go nuts, but hopefully they will be kept under control. It's a shame that we have to think that way, but it's better to be safe then sorry.

I'm not horribly concerned about the date. I'm more worried about copycats. My son's school was on lock down today due to threats. Not cool.

Someone called one of the schools in my area to threaten them recently too. Man, it seems like people are determined to cause the end of the world with their violence and horribleness.

I'm with you. I'm not worried about the world ending but I am worried about what some people will act like on Friday. We have had several threats called in at local schools here.

I never considered it, but I don't see much going on in the place I live, or am from, thankfully.

Not really afraid. I survived a lot of end-of-the-world days already.

I just talked to my wife about this. It's bullshit to have to think that way. The mass media has really fucked the pooch on this one and they keep blurting out all this nonsense like it's fact. All it does is make these bat shit crazy looney tune people go stir crazy. I am a little worried that some nut job may do something crazy. I am worried about that.

I think there are going to be lots of 'end of the world' parties and drunk people and otherwise inebriated individuals and probably a lot of arrests or robberies. Depending on the area and the economic desperation and who decides to be gun-ho and dgaf since 'we're all gonna die'

then there's the concern for people who think aliens are coming to reclaim the world

and then the whole new world order conspiracy crap...

Gonna go to my usual gym swim class, but otherwise keep a very low profile that day, just in case. Had not thought about it before seeing this post, but there are some grade A crazies in the world. Sad that I have to adjust my day around that, but I just have too much to lose to do otherwise.

Not afraid but I would be pissed cause I have been away on business for awhile and I get back on the 21 so if the world ends I wouldn't be able to see my wife.

Hadn't considered that, but I doubt that anyone would try anything.

I'm really not concerned. The schools here are already out for Winter Break, so my sisters will be fine. Even then, last year, there literally was a bomb threat at my younger sister's school every single day for two weeks. All they do is check everyone's backpacks as they come in the school if the threat happened before school started. If the threat happens after school starts, they just make all the kids leave their stuff in the classrooms and everyone has to go stand outside in the parking lot for a few hours, then they eventually go back in. Nobody's ever sent home or anything.

The bomb threat we had when I went there was because apparently someone wrote a bomb threat on the bathroom wall. I got yelled at for walking into the school to go to band practice that morning (I didn't know about the bomb threat) and they made me take off my backpack and open for them to check, scolded me more, demanded to know how I got in, and then finally let me go. It was Valentine's Day, too, so it took forever for them to check everyone. It was ridiculous.

No, I'm not afraid. I don't think most people think they have "nothing to lose" because of the Mayan calendar thing, regardless of how unstable they may be otherwise.

I've lived in two of the larger cities in the country, and near famous landmarks. There's a small but real risk of crazy people doing something every day, and there have been many thwarted attempts.

Just a thought: What if nothing would have ever happened if the date hadn't been publicized? What if it is a self fulfilling prophecy and global change/meltdown/whatev er happens only because nutwads around the planet went loony when things didn't happen at the exact moment they were supposed to?

I'm not a super religious person but at times like these I think of two different things:

Psalm 23, and Hank Williams Jr's A Country Boy Will Survive.

So if/when stuff does eventually hit the fan (not necessarily on the 21st) I will do as I have always done. Be a pessimistic bastard, keep my head low, and do what I can to keep me and anyone I can help going. You'd be surprised how much being a pessimist can save your ass. Instead of patiently waiting for a pleasant scenario, I have everyone I can think of mapped out in my head. If it can go wrong, it will... and you have to be ready to pick up the pieces and keep moving.

Maybe I'm just a different kind of nutwad, but I don't give up.

I guess being a fiction writer has me doing logical extrapolations of a given set of circumstances. This one would have - media attention to an ancient artifact, intentional misinformation through personal entertainment which others are exposed to, a recent tragedy by someone raised to look for such things, and a few dozen copycats adding fuel to the fire. (How many novels have these circumstances? More than you think.) Not to mention people who are looking for an End of the World scenario and/or zombie apocalypse, and I can't be sure who's really sane enough or not.

I'm quite sure the majority of people will go about their lives or at least keep low profiles. It's the few who will make trouble that I'm concerned about - chaos is difficult to control, especially with weapons involved.

Somewhat... Honestly I don't reasonably think anything major is going to happen tomorrow, but in the back of my head I'm still a little bit nervous. And I do think that there are going to be people who do crazy things tomorrow, so I'm probably just going to stay home.

So, it doesn't look like anything's happened - which I am relieved about. I'd rather be wrong with these types of worries. We still have the other half of the day, but things are really looking okay.
