A surprise might be nice, but I just think I have better ideas I'm also much more likely to actually take the initiative to plan something.

I don't think he'd pick something lame, though I would rather do the planning than leave it up to him. Sometimes he seems to put things off for way too long, so I'd rather know that it's all planned out with reservations made.

Both sound great to me! My partner is pretty good at picking things I'd like by now, but I can be a bit of a control freak and usually like to plan things myself.
