I'm not a woodcarver by any stretch of the imagination, so I wouldn't trust myself to make something 100% safe.

I've thought about turning some simple toys on the lathe. My major concern is what type of finish to use on them.

If I had any talent in that direction, absolutely. Some of my favorite toys when I was little were wooden (and they were rare even then). Unfortunately, even the shoe rack I assembled is a little crooked so...

If I knew how to I definitely would. I'm all about getting creative and making new toys.

Probably not due to concerns about the finish.

I never would. I don't know how to work with wood. I work with flour and sugar.

Any thoughts on the finish? Poly, a couple coats of hand rubbed lacquer, spar?

No, I do not want to spend a ton of money purchasing the necessary equipments, and I don't have a body-safe finish to apply on toxic woods.

I don't think I have the talent and wood seems like an unsafe material for this kind of thing.

No way! I'd be too worried that something wouldn't be just right about it for whatever reason.

Nope, I think that is best left to the professionals.

I don't imagine carving it would be an issue, but lacquering it and finishing it are likely difficult.

I don't think so. I've worked wood into a few of my sculptures and I find that I don't really enjoy the sanding phase of wood working. If i were to make a wooden toy I would be ocd with making sure it's as smooth as possible. I think if I had some experience working with a lathe my answer might be different, but the wood pieces I've made were large and took forever to complete. Initially I enjoy working with wood, but halfway through I'm over it. So I don't see this in my future.

If I had a master teach me, maybe. I want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I use it on me.
