Followers Dropping like flies

Contributor: indiechick indiechick
I wasn't sure where to post this.

Okay, so I follow people because I am actually interested in what they have to say, not for points. I realize that this is not the case for every person but that's how I feel. I also know that people have lives and do not post every single day, but I enjoy what they post when they can and would never unfollow them just because they didn't post for a few days. But for the last week every time I've logged on I've had followers dropping like flies. I don't think I've done anything to deserve the abandonment and wanted to make sure that this doesn't effect my ranking or anything else.

That's weird! Maybe some people deleted their accounts?

Number of followers doesn't contribute to your rank. (see here)
As to why it happens, I have no idea.

Are they just not posting or are the numbers actually going down? Maybe it is coincidental and they are all closing their accounts now..

I have noticed the followers dropping and then picking back up. I think some people do this for points and then unfollow so they can add you again later. Just my theory, since I have noticed this has happened to me as well.

but why do that? there are thousands of reviewers here, there's no way someone's followed EVERYONE, especially as dozens seem to be added every day.

I agree that every now and again I get a follower who follows me... After they've already followed me a few times! I agree that it's for the points. The only reason I notice is because I thank everyone who follows me, not because I keep up with the numbers.

It's nothing personal. Think of it like this, if they're just in it for the points do you even WANT someone like that following you?

It does seem a bit silly that they would refollow instead of just continuing to follow everyone for points. There has to be hundreds of members.

If you go by the Profiles page, there are currently close to 23,000 members with profiles (I would take that to mean people whose accounts are open, whether active or not). So yes, there is no way they have added everyone...at ten people a day, it would take about 2,300 days, or over six years. In that amount of time, thousands of new members would have joined up. There really is a never-ending supply of members to follow, if that is what people are going for.

I've never paid attention, but I'm sure this has happened.

I've seen a message that says "so and so is following you" and then a few days later the same person is following again. They had to have deleted the follow to do that. But, I've never looked into it.

People do this to get points. I wouldn't get upset about it.

As silly as it may be you would be surprised at how many times it happens. I notice it happening a lot. I will get a comment on my wall that says following and when I check out their page to follow them back, they aren't following anyone at all. They follow and unfollow all the time. I notice my number goes up and down all the time. I always alert the forum moderator about this. If you know who is unfollowing and following. These people tell on themselves actually. By following no one, all your activity shows up on your wall. So, it will say they followed and unfollowed so and so.

Good point...and no I don't. It's nice to see your point totals go up esp. if you are really longing for something but to drop people and pick back up is weird and yet it just happened. Such is life I guess

WOW, that is interesting information. I always wondered how many members were here at EF.

Some people come and go, which is to be expected.

I don't think that people actually get points for following someone a second time.

In fact, I just tested this...
I followed you previously -- I just went in and clicked "unfollow". Then, as I obviously still want to follow you, I decided to follow you. No points were rewarded for this.

i agree. i follow people to read their great reviews or if they are or were a student of mine. i hate it when i get notifications saying so and so followed you then i go to profile and they aren't there.

I don't think that it is really that big a deal. If someone follows you and then following you right away they are clearly doing it for the points. So no big deal. If someone follows you and stays because you are interesting then those are the ones that will stay and that should be alright.
