Should there be a .xxx suffix for porn sites?

Contributor: Gary Gary
This is an interesting topic consider the censorship in libraries thread from yesterday.

I was just reading an article about creating a new domain suffix .xxx and it got me to thinking... if ALL porn sites ended in .xxx, it would be really easy to filter porn for computer users under 18. I am sure if you are a determined 16 year old you will figure out ways around it, but at least 8 year olds looking up Pokemon wouldn't find Pokemon porn.

What are your thoughts?

Personally, I would use the .xxx for my blog and band site just because it is cool... if it became available.

Is there really pokemon porn??

Of course there is, but..just...wow. lol

It would be a good idea, IF you could actually find a way to make all adult sites use it, but I don't know how you'd even begin to make that work. There will always be someone who wants to not use it so they can be that site that makes it through the library filters.

Pokemon porn... wow.

I would rock a .XXX site address, no problem. Fuck it why not?

I don't believe, that children should be looking at these things anyway. Shit, 18 years isn't even long enough for childhood. Why expose children so early, before they have the knowledge to know what's wrong or right?!

so yeah I'd rock a .XXX

I think we are more interested about the Pokemon porn than the topic of this thread.

But yeah, .xxx sounds like a great idea.

Lol - aren't we all?

I think it'd be a pretty good idea. It would certainly make filtering easier to do, I think.

I'm not even going to think about Pokemon porn (lol).

Yeah, the .xxx domain suffix would be a brilliant idea. It really would be a simple thing to code browsers and OS's with a toggle for blocking them then, and people on both sides of the fence could relax a bit. Parents wouldn't have to worry about their kids stumbling across porn, and site owners wouldn't have to worry about taking heat because somebody's kid did so.

My only question would be the obvious one --how do you differentiate between what's porn and what's art? Like, okay, it'd be easy enough to argue why RAGING HARD VEINY BONERS dot com is porn. But what about an artist like Tania Bruguera that uses nudity and explicit imagery to make powerful political statements? It gets into tricky territory, for sure. I totally believe people should be able to filter the content that they and their families are viewing on the internet, but it gets weird when in order to do that we have to back all artists into corners about how their art is and is not; is there a boob in it? PORN.

Like I said, tricky stuff.

I like the idea of having the domain (and it even might help with some business plans) but it can't really be a useful tool for folks looking to categorize or possibly censor content unless you force companies to use it (after all, one of the well known tactics of porn websites is to use misleading URLs - whitehouse.com, anyone?) And I don't mean to make it sound like there's no legit reason to use a different extension because I don't believe that's true, either.

Definitely a great idea, but it would be very difficult to implement. It would certainly be comforting knowing that my future kids wouldn't stumble upon anything they shouldn't see though...

Good question. My answer would be to think of what young children are seeing online. Besides, the sites that I was thinking about... there is no doubt!

Well, I think that people of any age should be able to view art (even if there is nudity, it's art). So I do not feel that those should have the .xxx

But I do like the thought of this. That WOULD be an easy way to block such sites that are inappropriate.

I think it would be a good idea. It'd give people a tip that a site will end up searing their eyes from their sockets.

I would have to agree with this 100%, that's actually how I was going to phrase it as well, lol

Great idea. Now we can have "Freud.xxx" and "Michelangelo.xxx" - which is just what the Christian Talibans ordered - mass ignorance.

If they are porn sites with actors portraying Freud or Michelangelo having sex, then the tag would make sense.

I think .xxx would be good.
I think .cum would be better.
I keep typing it when I go to my site -- must be a Freudian slip
