Should masturbation be added to highschool health/sex textbooks and be covereed in class at least superficially?

We talked about masturbation in sex ed from 7th until 12th grade

There's a huge culture of shame surrounding sex/sex ed in this country and I think masturbation association shame could be the route of it. Teach everything! Everything taught in school is for later in life, so teens should be taught the same way in sex ed. Anything an adult needs to know for a healthy sex life should be taught.

Girls in particular could really benefit from this

I think it's an amazing idea. Go over the techniques a bit. Yesyesyes.

My school briefly touched on it. Like, it was mentioned once in a video that it was normal and you wouldn't grow hair on your palms. And that was a horribly conservative school.

I think that it should be mentioned. Young men are aware of it by the time they are in high school typically, but a lot of young women might be benefited by a little info too. I think masturbation is healthy and should even be encouraged, but I know that will never happen in the USA.

It should be mentioned, especially the female aspect so that more girls know it is acceptable to masturbate and be more open about it.
Yeah, I agree with that.

We talked about it in my health class back when I was in high school. My state is pretty progressive as far as sex ed goes, but I know a lot of states still treat sex ed as a taboo topic.

I needed absolutely no help on learning how to spank it when i was a teen. I voted yes because I believe it is good practice to give people as much information about their bodies as possible.

I don't think we need step by step instructions, but it should certainly be touched on. Masturbation is an important part of sexuality.

my school taught about how masturbation is safer than other forms of sex

It should be covered in at least the minimum of making it understood that it is normal and healthy. Most kids get a really terrible sex ed at home and at school plus they may feel cultural or religious pressure that it is bad. Young women especially need to hear this since it is so taboo for women to pleasure themselves in a culture that is dominated by the penis as the sole bringer of pleasure (which we all know is not always true). At least going over it briefly will also help more people be less hesitant or scared to try it, and it will simultaneously teach many to learn about their bodies and sexuality indirectly.

This absolutely should be discussed in schools as a healthy normal part of human sexuality. No one should feel ashamed for doing something so completely natural.

Sexual repression leads to all sorts of issues. We need to move away from being such a Puritanically hypocritical nation, not to mention the fact that our current society condones male masturbation but vilifies female masturbation, which we really ought to be fixing because it inherently reinforces misogyny in the gender binary.

Definitely. At least the basics should be covered, and it should be presented in a positive light.

As a culture we bitch and moan so much about "babies having babies," then turn around and act all appalled when young people utilize a safe and healthy way to satisfy their urges. Some people prefer to talk with their kids about it personally and that's fine... but how many other households will vilify the act? It's the sad truth that parents don't always make good sex ed teachers, and for children with parents like that, an alternative should be available.

This thread made me realize that, back in my sex-ed classes (which ironically did not focus on abstinence-only), the clitoris didn't get a mention. You know, that magic little organ that the majority of women need to stimulate to have an orgasm? Some adult men and even adult women don't know about it. To me, that's downright appalling.

I don't remember learning ANYTHING about female masturbation during my middle and high school sex ed, and honestly I felt ashamed for years. it would be worth it just to spare people from that shame.

I think that would be awesome. My sex education consisted of putting the girls and boys in separate rooms and handing them a diagram of the sex organs to label. There was no discussion, not even the old condom-on-the-banana display. Pretty much anything would be better than that.

Yes. I went to a very liberal school that had--for the most part--very informative sex-ed, but not a word on female masturbation. Nothing about the clitoris except, oh yeah, women have a weird little nub down there, make sure you can label it on a diagram. It's ridiculous that so many women end up knowing so little about their own bodies.

Yes, but mostly talking about the practical risks involved. Most kids can figure it out quickly, they just don't always seem to practice moderation.

Hm...I remember I never even really properly learned what sex was in school. So, teaching masturbation during health class would be weird...unless it was divided by gender.

A little unrelated, but in a university human sexuality textbook I had it told me how Dr. Kelloggs (the cornflakes guy!) was so against masturbation that he advocated circumcision as a 'cure' for any child caught doing it...
