What religion do you identify yourself with?

Contributor: puffkix puffkix
I've seen quite a few polls regarding religion/spirituality and its impact on sex and sexuality, so I was wondering what sort of religious congregation we've got here.

I know there's a lot of religions out there but there's only so much space in here and being the westerner I am, I filled it with mostly Judeo-Christian religions... But there is an other option

I don't identify. Religion is full of ritual and tradition and I lack the time for those things. I find that my beliefs are more in line with Buddhism but I don't feel comfortable identifying with anything at this point in time.

I don't identify either. I kinda morph my own theories about the universe. Per Rufus, "I think it's better to have ideas. You can change an idea. Changing a belief is trickier."

I'm a nonthiest (just less abrasive way to put athiest..I just think "athiest" sounds so abrupt..must have been the way I was raised which was not nontheist)

But I also view the world similar to the way that Buddhists do. Which isn't contradicting since most types of Buddhism are nontheist and they're more "World Views" than actually religions. I have not done all that is done to consider myself a Buddhist, but if there were a "religion" that I'd follow or relate most to it would be Buddhism.

I was raised Catholic, but don't practice it. It's still on my med records, so I will be taken to the local University Hospital, which is a Catholic Hospital and the best hospital in the area. I also do want Rite for the Sick if I were to be very sick to be performed.

Otherwise I identify as "Generic Christian." Pro-Choice, non-judgmental (as much as anyone can be, I hope) but I like the things that Jewish Carpenter had to say about Life and Love and how to treat others and the afterlife. Other people's religions are completely tolerable and even welcome to me, unless they are "shove it down your throat" stuff. I have a lot of friends who identify as Wiccan or just Pagan, and we get along well. My honor of the Blessed Mary, to many of them, seems to be compatible with Polytheism and Woman Based Religions. It's funny, because I know some people who are Pentecostal or Evangelical, and they also see the Catholic faith, with the Blessed Mother and the Saints as being "Polytheistic" but not in the very positive terms that my Pagan friends do.

I was raised Mormon, and my hubby was Catholic, but we were both forced into a religion we didn't believe in, so we aren't doing that to our kids, if they come to us and want to know about God, and want to go to church, then at that point we will either go or explain.

I am closest to atheist, but do not like most of the people who ARE atheist since they're pretentious, pompous assholes, so I consider myself not affiliated with religion. I am not afraid to say, however, that I do not believe that there is a god.

God and I are not on speaking terms at the moment, so I'm agnostic.

He started it.

(Raised Baha'i, though. Aesthetic sense of a Celtic Pagan.)

I love that! I may have to use it if my extended family gets all crazy religious on me.

And I've heard of Baha'i before. That's supposed to be a very open, accepting viewpoint, right?

This is exactly true for me too. I've been using the term nontheist for quite a while. People have such negative reactions to the word atheist, sometimes feeling like they have to save me.

Ditto on liking Buddhism too.

That's why I never actually say "I'm an athiest" because people normally think of the pretentious, pompous assholes and I don't want to be lumped into that!

I was raised and baptized Church of God. I've been Wiccan, atheist, general Pagan, humanist. I'm now a devout agnostic, sorta. My ideas are easily changed as more information becomes available. I kinda believe in two things that I can't/won't define...so I think I'm diagnostic.

I feel the same way. Along with not having time for the rituals and traditions, I don't find them necessary to spiritualism. In fact, I think they sometimes get in the way. I take bits from all religions that I identify and believe in. Though I have the most issues with Christianity, I still find great solace by reciting the Serenity prayer. I love the Buddhist religion, and identify a lot with its teachings. I also have aligned my self in the past with Wicca and Paganism in general, in my early searches for spirituality. I have a deep respect and love for the earth and focus more on life energies and the balance between positive and negative. I like the mythology behind the old Gods and Goddesses. The only ritualistic practices I have are using herbs and oils in baths and teas for healing, and I use cleansing rituals. I also practice meditation and Yoga to center my mind, body, and spirit.

Atheism itself is in no way, shape or form a religion. However, there might be some Atheists who view it as a religion for themselves.

Definitely. I've been to the Church of Atheism before and the rhetoric was much heavier than Sunday school ever was.

I guess I am a closet Atheist. I usually keep it to myself. I don't like closing a discussion before it begins, just because I have an opposing view.
