Sex Fact: Homosexuality and Heterosexuality By the Numbers

Contributor: Kayla Kayla
OkCupid, one of the larger free dating sites out there, frequently analyzes the data of their users. In this particular instance, they chose to analyze the data of their self-identified gay users versus their self-identified straight users.

They found that the median reported amount of sex partners was the same between both heterosexual and homosexual people with the median being 6 partners.

They also found that 45% of homosexual people have had 5 or fewer partners (versus 44% for heterosexuals) while 98% of homosexuals have had 20 or fewer partners (versus 99% for heterosexual people). They found that just 2% of homosexuals have had 23% of the total reported homosexual sex.

When asking heterosexual people if they've ever had an encounter with someone of the same sex, almost a quarter of their respondents answered with a "yes" with 1 in 3 heterosexual women having hooked up with another woman and of those who haven't, 1 in 4 would like to.

These sex facts were retrieved from OkCupid who did a study on their userbase.

Do any of these sex facts surprise you? Do you have any other facts you'd like to add?

I'd have thought that the numbers would be roughly the same, but all in all I'm not really surprised.

Hmm... The question is how well such a site reflects the regular population.

It is hard to determine how closely that mirrors the general population, but it's an interesting breakdown nonetheless

Okcupid users might not be a representative sample of the general population since it only includes people looking for sexual/romantic relationships.

Those numbers don't really surprise me. Most of my friends are gay, and they don't seem to have any more or fewer partners than my straight friends.
