The article's about a new study which states that women have better orgasms with wealthy partners. An excerpt:

“Women’s orgasm frequency increases with the income of their partner,” said Dr Thomas Pollet, the Newcastle University psychologist behind the research.

Checking my wallet...crapola.

Um. I'm gonna need a buyout on a new onacup, please.

I dunno. It's been my experience that the broker the dude the harder he tries.

If he can't win ya with money he's sure gonna try to win you with great sex.

This doesn't make very much sense to me... Just because a person is wealthy, they give more orgasms? Sex toys can be bought, orgasms themselves cant.

Now I'm curious if Hugh Hefner is actually good in bed ha ha. All this time I had thought it was the money...

That was my first thought too.

This current study was done in China. The article does mention prior research that was done in the US and Germany; it doesn’t seem to me that they used the data from those studies to determine their findings in this article. They cite that the other studies looked at psychical attributes and money as attraction factors, with money being the winner.

Faking orgasms, marrying for money…of course, these things are commonplace. The article just seemed a little skewed to me. Especially considering cultural differences, I’m not going to take it too seriously.

To each her own. Money can’t buy you love, right?

As a scientist, I'd like to weigh in with several points:

1) Never trust an article that won't link back to the original study.

2) This study is based on self-reporting, which is notoriously inaccurate and cannot be the basis for any conclusions in the absence of data obtained in a more controlled manner.

3) Evolutionary Psychology makes me want to smash things. As someone who studies an aspect of human evolution, I can tell you that Ev Psych "studies" are frequently nothing more than just-so stories that conclude that the way things are in Western civilization is somehow how humans were magically destined to end up given our genetic makeup. Most of these "studies" are exercises in confirming the biases of the scholar doing the study, so they are not infrequently heavily steeped in baseless misogyny. AND they display a fundamental misunderstanding of how evolution works.

Case and point, this study, trying to prove that women are genetically programmed to be "gold diggers." Absolutely no attempt is made to control for socialization factors, so any conclusions they make about "genetics" aren't valid. Most of the time the fact that women are treated as second class citizens in many societies and therefore financially dependent on men isn't considered as a motivating factor for self-reporting results like this. Nah, it must be genetic.

Sorry for the long post. I get irritated by these studies both for social and scientific reasons. Non-science masquerading as science is never a good thing. It makes me really happy to see that everyone here was skeptical.

Oh, I love the rampant batshittery of all these studies. Of course you can manipulate people (who in turn are manipulating the researchers, as nobody tells the sexual truth), and finagle the numbers about until you've got the result you wanted in the first place. It ain't science, but it sure is entertaining.

What I'd really like to know is who funds these sorts of exercises in commercial gratuity. (Put your checkbook down, Ms. Wintour.)

You're right, it's funny in a totally ridiculous way. There are so many people that can't tell the difference, though, between real studies and crap studies, and that's why I end up in smash mode.

Self reporting is bad for EVERYTHING, but it's especially bad for sexual stuff. Re: funding, oh man, if I knew, there'd be some egging of houses, at the minimum.

I agree with this.

And at the risk of sounding like a horrible anti-Sino person, China is a country where matches are still often done in the traditional method, with same-"class" people being matched up. The focus is on money more often than any sort of pleasure; it's that way in a lot of Asian countries.

I dunno I suppose if I were to leave my two very modest income guys and find Mr. Super-Rich I could afford all of my wish list toys, this COULD lead to bigger and more frequent orgasms.....
