We do this frequently as an addition to our sex lives. It adds a closeness to masturbate togehter that sometimes can be missing from just sex. After all--this is a personal, taboo activity that is generally not shared or talked about and to watch each other can really open up doors of security and trust in a relationship.

I would definitely consider this to be sex. Yes, I've done it, and do it regularly. I think I'd probably be sexually incompatible with someone who was uncomfortable with this, or who thought of it as somehow "not really sex"/"less than" sex.
