Is smell a dealbreaker?

Contributor: laflauta laflauta
A person's smell can have a big impact on attraction. It's one of nature's ways of making sure that we're picking a compatible mate. I've been very physically attracted to people before, only to notice that I don't like how they smell once I get closer. Is bad smell a dealbreaker for you?

In general, the way men smell is a huge turn off to me. It's one of the things I can't get over. I haven't met a single man whose smell appeals to me. There have only been a few women whose smell I didn't like but that's typically due to hygiene, health, or diet.

If a man stinks, I can't go down on him or be turned on at all.

Yes, that is important to me. Luckily the female I am dating always smells lovely all over the place!

I won't date someone who doesn't care enough about themselves to go out smelling bad. However, I love the way y man smells even when he's a bit gross and sweaty. I guess it's pheromones, but he just always smells great to me.

Apart from unwashed people who reek of stale sweat, I don't think I've ever noticed that someone has had an unpleasant smell about them. I don't like going to other people's family homes though, because often they have an odd smell about them relating to the inhabitants.

It does. Everyone has their own scent about them. Some people, I can't tolerate their smell. I just don't like it at all, so I wouldn't be able to deal with it.

Definitely, there is nothing worse than B.O. It is not that hard to take a shower regularly!

If they aren't attempting to cover it up, then yes. If not, no. It's a medical condition sometimes and I wouldn't break up with someone for having diabetes, so why would I break up with someone with bad smell, if it were a medical reason?

Sometimes, it's fixable. But if it's not, what can I say? If every time you get intimate with someone you feel like vomiting, it's not exactly an incentive to get closer, is it? I think it's important, just like looks are important. It's not shallow to want to be physically attracted to your partner--it's a necessity.

Even more than smell for me is oral hygiene actually.

My ex would smell so strange after working out. I couldn't stand to be in the same room with him. My husband.. well, he comes in after a run, and it's delightful

It depends, if there is a reason for the smell then I don't have a problem with it.

My hubby works driving truck and he might be on the road for several days between where he picked up and home. There aren't always showers at the places he has to stop when his hours run out. He does try to keep wet wipes in his truck and a body spray so he doesn't get too bad. He will try not to go more than 2 days without a shower because he doesn't like to. I'm not turned off because I think it's sexy that he is working his hardest to make money to support us.

If a person has access to a shower but is just too lazy to shower, then it is a different story. I just want nothing to do with them.

I imagine it would be a dealbreaker for me, however, I have been very lucky in that all of my partners have been clean and no bad odors at all!

Okay, when I read the title, I assumed you meant B.O. or a bad smell. But I see you mean just any personal scent in general, not just hygenically bad smells. Lol. So I chose other because it it's just cologne choice or deo, not so bad. I could always sneak a better smelling product into their soap bottle. LOL.

Body odor or an odor due to being unhygenic is probably a deal breaker. I can do sweat. We all sweat, and actually, studies have shown the smell of a man's sweat is an "aphrodisiac" for women. Not like the horrid sweaty odor, but the sweat you may not actually notice you smell, but is still there, if that makes sense. Body odor is never pleasant.

If it was just a matter of excessive sweat or a scent of their products I don't like for whatever reason, that's not going to be enough to keep me from pursuing them. However, like I said, if the person just doesn't take care of themselves and therefore stinks, it is a deal breaker.

Actually there has been some studies that show that people are attracted to people who have a different genetic code. The body can tell these differences through smell.

There are parties now where people wear the same shirt for a few days freeze it in a plastic bag and bring it to a Pheromone Party. Then people of the opposite sex sniff your shirt and and you are with the person whose shirt smells the best.
