Would it bother you to have a young-looking partner?

Contributor: Rin (aka Nire) Rin (aka Nire)
I worry about this from time to time. I'm a 22 year-old who is routinely mistaken for a high schooler, sometimes as young as 14. I think I look very pretty, but very few guys show any interest in me - and half of those that do are usually total creepers. I wonder if it has to do with my younger appearance.

Would it bother you to have a partner who looked young, even if they were of a legal age?

I asked my Master that once, as people commonly mistake me for being fifteen years younger than I am (aka Barely Old Enough to Drink). He didn't have a problem with it at all and likes my 'freshness' but also likes that I'm not naive.

I often don't get approached by guys - it's usually when out shopping or in my college classes or whatever. People get funny looks on their faces when I tell them I was once married for ten years. Telling them I'm 34 makes for some very interesting facial expressions.

At least you look old enough to drink. I can just about look my age if I dress just right, but it doesn't always work and my most comfortable outfits (involving tying my hair back and wearing looser shirts) make me look younger.

Some of my guy friends complain about looking too young, so they grow facial hair. We ... just don't have an option like that. So we have to dress 'older'.

... Never thought I'd feel envious of the bearded lady. (No offense to any actual bearded ladies, of course!)

people very commonly mistakes me for 16, or around there. it's highly annoying - especially in the working world. i definitely feel that it is why some men look right past me. my boyfriend doesn't seem to have a problem though - maybe because he took the time to get to know me. i guess the guys that look past looks and age are the ones that are worth it.

Indeed. I'm happy you have a boyfriend like that.

Ironically, fewer people guess me at being under 18 when I'm on the job. Since I work with live animals, I'd have to be at least 18 anyway, and most people are aware of that. It still happens from time to time, though.

A qualified no.

I would not care if my existing partner appeared younger, but it might be a barrier to getting with them (assuming they were younger and not approaching them.)

I'm 7 years younger than my guy, but he looks pretty young. I dress pretty young, so we get harassed a lot, and then we both laugh about it.

I don't give a damn, as I like them looking youthful. My current partner, however, is 26 and looks like he's 18 or so.

I often hear I look very young. It use to bother me but as I get older it isn't so bad. I have had a few issues working in schools. High school for the most part is really hard because a lot of the students and staff mistake me for a student. My husband isn't bothered by it at all.

My boyfriend is 23 and people sometimes say he looks 18 or 19. It doesn't matter to me. He doesn't look underage, and I'm only 21 anyways. If he looked like he was 14 I wouldn't be attracted to him. Even when I was 14 I was attracted to men in their 20's, and had no interest in other 14 year olds.

I frequently hear that I look AND sound young. At the doctors office the other day, the nurse commented: "OH! Your file says you're 25..that has to be a mistake. You don't look a day over 17!" ..she continued to go on about how young I apparently look. ..That was annoying. More annoying is when telemarketers call me and ask "can I speak to your mom?" -- which used to happen ALL the time, but hasn't happened lately.

That said, I've never had anyone tell me that I look (or sound) too young to date.

I hear that a lot, and while I know it's true, it doesn't make it any easier to keep getting mistaken for a child now.

I guess it would depend on how young he looked. But I do appreciate a manly look.

Maybe a little, but I'd probably get over it if they were say 20 and looked like they were in their late teens. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't be with them.

Doesn't bother me. It did take some getting used to at first, but I was mostly attracted to her because she was a history nerd, so I adapted (I'm a slow changing person).

it wouldn't bother me one bit. People will always stare but this shouldn't change how you feel about a person.

LOL when a telemarketer calls and asks to speak to my Mom I give them her number...cause I'm nice like that!
My life partner is 27 and I am 41. As long as I have my hair colored and styled properly everyone assumes we are married since I wear a very large and showy ring...and we have a son who is old enough now to call us Mommy and Daddy.
He has a very short hair cut that befits a security guard but when his hair was down to the middle of his very long back we got some odd looks...then again he is this 6 foot built guy and I am a 5 foot rubenesque woman....could be the age question was not even on anyone's mind!

I guess it would depend on how young they looked. If they really looked like they were in their early to mid teens I think that might be a little weird for me. I've never been in that situation, though, so I don't really know for sure how I'd handle it.
