I've never used one, but I don't find them degrading. If you like it then you like it. There's nothing wrong with that. I don't believe in kink shaming.

For some reason they always "seemed" more degrading to me than other kinds of gags, but I think it's mostly because I've associated them in my head with pretty misogynistic porn. I'd be curious to use one in real life and see how that was different (which it would be, presumably, with a consenting partner I actually know and like).

While I'm not sure that any particular item is degrading in and of itself, yes, ball gags are often (but not always) associated with degradation, humiliation, and the like. That's not necessarily a bad thing, however! That psychological aspect is one of the main reasons why ball gags are sexy and, provided the parties fully consent and want it, it's perfectly healthy.
