Non-serious rivalries within a relationship

Contributor: Annemarie Annemarie
You have an Android phone, he has an iPhone. She likes the Yankees, he prefers the Red Sox. She would rather use a Mac, he wants to use Windows.

When the world draws a line between two things with serious fan bases and your mate has chosen the 'them' side, what happens?

For example, my significant other is an avid NY Jets fan. Me? I rather like the Patriots, and we've both been fans of our respective teams for awhile. It's a serious sports rivalry. When it comes down to game time, we trash talk each other like there's no tomorrow. When the game's over? There might be some playful ribbing in talking about strategy (we both play fantasy football in the same league), but other than that, it doesn't bleed over into other areas of our life. He also has an iPhone, and I'm an Android fan girl. That's a whole 'nother story.

Does your relationship have these kinds of rivalries? How do you deal with them? Would it be a deal breaker for someone to be on the "them" team?

(I seriously hope this makes sense to someone out there!)

My partner and I have tons of rivalries, but they're pretty nerdy. Like, he's Horde and I'm Alliance, he likes Final Fantasy 8 and I like Final Fantasy 7. We have tons, and sometimes get into heated arguments about why which thing is better.

We don't really do anything to make it better or worse; it's actually pretty fun to not have everything in common with my partner. Otherwise we would always agree on everything, and we both have argumentative spirits.

Alliance scum! Lol. Just kidding. But your taste in Final Fantasy is better.

My boyfriend and I don't really disagree on things like that. We have different interests but I don't think there is anything that he likes and that I like that conflict so much that we "argue". Except maybe with food? I despise McDonald's and he likes it. I hate bacon but he loves it. Things like that.

I feel like we may be the same person. xD I hate McDonalds and I also hate bacon. As far as our arguing goes, it's never a serious battle that ends in anger. He just shoots down my opinions and I do the same. It only gets heated because we never agree that one or the other of us might be right. It's actually pretty funny.

None of our arguments are ever really serious, at least never serious enough to end in anger at all. And the only "noteworthy" difference that I can think of off the top of my head is that he likes old Lincolns and I like old Cadillacs, lol.

There are definitely plenty of minor, "I prefer this, you prefer that" sort of situations in our relationship, but none of it is ever really a big deal. Even if we joke with eachother about it there have never been any real fights about it.

He hates green bell peppers (well, all bell peppers) and I adore them.
He loves liver sausage and I hate it.
He likes action movies, I like rom-coms.

We don't let them get in the way, I get my sandwiches with peppers and he doesn't. For every rom-com I put him through, I sit through an action flick. The liver sausage we haven't compromised on, yet. It just stinks up the house so badly!

As long as things like this don't cause real fights you will be fine.

Non-serious rivalries just add spice in my opinion, letting you joke around with each other with no serious consequences
