We only had phone sex when we were in undergrad and spending summers alone.
Now that I'm leaving to grad school, I suspect we will begin doing it again.
What I like to do most is to plan a night to have sex. Then on that day, sext him naughty things I'm going to do to him and pics throughout the day to get him hot.
Phone sex is great if both people are good at masturbating and can climax around the same time. If one finishes quickly, they essentially have to fake it while the other is finishing. My husband and I do the dirty text messages, but not really the phone calls. It's nice for us to be able to take a few minutes to think about a text reply, but we don't have that luxury with real time conversation, and we both feel kind of silly talking dirty sometimes. Not like the act is something silly or anything like that, but that we feel that we suck at it, lol.
