Social acceptance of polyamory vs polygamy

Contributor: Mylo Mylo
I recently learned that there is a large group of people who are in polyamory relationships. My question is why does it seem that polyamory relationships are accepted socially more than a polygamy relationship? Obviously there are some polygamous relationships that are forced relationships and not chosen, which is wrong regardless of your beliefs. I am talking more about a chosen polygamous lifestyle like the TLC Sister Wives and why those do not seem socially acceptable.

Polygamy is frowned upon because it creates a disparity between the sexes in terms of choice and freedoms. When a woman is told that she cannot have another lover but her male partner can that isn't equality. Also it seems a little silly to say that one man should have all these children but the state needs to take care of the "single" mothers.

Now if you have made the choice to be a sister wife and you care for your children responsibly and without raping the rest of us I have no heartburn over your making a lifestyle choice! The problem is the decisions and practices of a few nasty old men that have soured the public on the practice but then again the public wasn't going to accept the practice anyhow so it wouldn't have taken much to sour them.

Polyamory is about the freedom to choose for oneself what is best and being sexually responsible. Monogamy is forced onto people and rarely actually chosen as a lovestyle. I am all for CHOOSING what works best for you, for whatever reasons you choose it but choosing means being responsible for all of the outcomes and those who would control us cannot allow that to happen. We must remain children forever stunted and told what we must do to "earn" the love of a deity. So the issue isn't cut and dried...there are many reasons that polyamory isn't accepted and why polygamy is also frowned upon.
