Book Reviews

I struggle with writing my book reviews. The question for me is how much information about the book will you find helpful, and at what point do you consider it spoiling the book for you?

Some people (myself included) can be told the whole story from start to finish in an abbreviated version, and not be deterred at all from reading, however, I know there are a lot of people who will plug their ears and hum if they are worried you might spoil it for them. So what is too little, and what is too much?

That's a very good question, and Alan & I haggle over it each time we write a book review. I tend to be like you; tell me as much as you want (abbreviated), and if it sounds good then I'm *still* going to want to read the whole story. Alan likes details up to a point, but he hates it when somebody gives away the ending.

It will be interesting to see what other contributors have to say about this.

I've only written for books of short stories as of right now, but what I try to do is summarize a few stories that stood out to me for whatever reason, and give an idea if the rest of the book is on par or not. I've given away the ending to a few stories where it was probably pretty obvious what was going to happen from the beginning or the ending was just too bizarre not to mention something, but I think giving away the ending of a few short stories isn't too bad, because there's always the rest of the book.

For me when reading a book review, don't tell me the plot line and summary of every story in the book, especially when there's like, 20 stories. I want to hear about just enough stories to draw me in, and when you tell me about all of them it kind of kills that for me.
