About editing... getting approved

Contributor: Zombirella Zombirella
Okay, so I don't get it and I feel kind of hurt....or like I'm stupid or something. I got an email saying I didn't get approved to be an editor. I don't understand why....I have a 6.7 or something and my reviews (besides the first few) get EU or U votes. Do I suck that bad? Am I missing something? Is there something I'm not doing right?

I don't know where to ask so I hope this section is okay. I just always had pride in my writing and all through school/college I received great grades in English or on any papers I had to write for class....and I have wrote a TON of papers in college, enough that I actually have carpel tunnel! I've wrote a 20 page paper and got a perfect score. I'm just a little hurt .

You may just not have been at the 'top' of the applicants. If they had a bunch of people apply early on that had been part of the community for years, written 100+ reviews, and written super good reasons they wanted to be editors, you may not have stood out too much.

Don't take things like that too personally! That's like not eating at a restaurant because they didn't hire you: it's not that they didn't think you were great, but you just weren't 100% their best applicant.

Thanks, I guess I didn't think of those reasons. I just assumed. When it comes to writing I guess I am just sensitive and automatically thought it was me personally.

Well, thanks for throwing those reasons as possibilities out there. I just got my feelings hurt and had my hopes up. Female hormones aren't the best at this time....I've been overly emotional about stuff this week. Thank God it's almost over for me.

I just instantly thought "Oh great, I suck and people are giving me pity votes on my reviews".

I think that we all get like that. I've had that happen before where I've been having a super stressful week and then I get some note from an admin about something I did wrong and I just feel like everyone's been nice to me because they feel obligated. It happens to the best of us!

Apply this next rotation and I bet you'll get in! I think that it's especially bad for us who are so active in the community to get rejected or reprimanded, probably because it really does start to feel like a 'family.'

Message me if you ever need to talk! I know how those pesky emotions can get when left to their own devices.

Please don't take it personally. There are a lot of factors that go into the selection, an amazing amount of applications, and a limited number of editors selected for each rotation. While you weren't selected this time, I hope that you'll apply for the next round

I never thought of those reasons until Ryuson brought it up. Thanks for taking time to stop here. I'll try again (and again if need be). I honestly don't know why I didn't think that a TON of other people applied. Thanks for the kind words, both of you .

Good luck next time!! I am going to be applying soon... hopefully and I'm really glad I came across this because I would have jumped to the same conclusion you did. Wishing you the bestest.

I felt pretty much the same. I've been rejected twice, but I have always been so good with English/Writing! It makes you feel kind of bad when if just says that you are rejected without any reason why. Guess we've gotta keep our hopes up and keep trying!

I was an editor last rotation and it seems like I read somewhere that there were 35 editors picked that time? Something like that?

I know the number was fairly low when you consider just how many people are on the site and have ratings high enough to apply.

Good luck next time!

You are not rejected!! You just did not make it to this rotation. There are four rotations per year and when taken into consideration there are over 100 applicants per rotation, around 35 applicants accepted--those are very high odds to overcome. Reapply for the next rotation, you do not feel rejected when you do not win the lottery after you buy a ticket, please do not feel rejected when you do not get the editing job on this lottery. Zombirella-you are a great reviewer, revel in your jobs well done, do not take this personally, it is more like a lottery than a job application.

Thanks ladies . I just took it the wrong way. I'll keep trying, hopefully I get to do it eventually! I never thought that there were that many people applying to do it, don't ask me why.

Don't worry! I was so disappointed the first round because I was denied too It was sort of a shock because I've actually gone to school for writing AND EDITING! I was somewhat crushed. Felt like I wasn't good enough, but I tend to get sensitive when it comes to writing because that is my number 1 talent and passion. Editing isn't the same as writing, but it's something I do and am educated in and I do it well. I was accepted this time and my email ver. won't work so I don't even get to edit! Maybe people get denied simply because the spaces were all filled, not because you aren't good enough. I am starting to think that may be it. I'm sure you'll get approved the second time around. I don't know how long you've been here either, but some of us have waited for nearly a year to get this. Some of us have waited anxiously and want it because we want to do a very good job. I could use the practice since editing will be part of my actual career and I plan to do my very best. Then I see all these reviews with 2 and 3 mistakes before you even get past the FIRST paragraph and it disappoints me that the editor didn't take time to actually do the job when some of us truly want it Sorry to rant.

Anyways, I'm sure you'll be approved when it comes time again. Just try to be patient. Use this time to practice and just put extra focus on your reviews for now. That is what I did. Also if you're a mentor, you'll have plenty of editing to do there. I think it's pretty fair, the editing program. I've not got to start yet because the damn email verification problems, but I think everyone will get their chance and all. Just be patient. Focusing on my school work editing and writing helped me pass the time without worrying too much about why I wasn't accepted.

Aww, congrats. You should email them and let them know you are having a problem so you don't lose your spot! You deserve it and I'm genuinely happy for you! I just jumped to the worst conclusion =/.

I don't mind the rant, I have seen it happen too. I kinda wanted to vote on the editors work but I felt like a jerk if I didn't rate them well so I just rated the review and not the editor because I didn't want them to see my name with that vote and be mad or dislike me. I mean, I know the voting option is there for us to use but I don't want to make any enemies here so I just leave the editing vote alone unless it is a good vote I would be giving and just hope that someone higher up sees it or someone that cares less of someone getting mad at them will see it and vote it the proper way.

I actually noticed a mistake in one of my own early reviews, a dumb spelling error and it's SO embarrassing because it's RIGHT THERE in your face listed as a con so one of the first things someone sees. I wish we could go back and edit old reviews because now that is stuck there and I look like a fool.

I will just apply again and again until I make it in. I wasn't aware of the other factors, I just thought it meant I wasn't good with writing.

Fingers crossed for next time! Just think, when the next round of applications comes up, you'll have an even better selection of reviews written for them to consider and more time in the community under your belt, so chances should be better, right? Just the fact that you'll be re-applying should say something towards the fact that you really want the job!
