Grammar, punctuation and things that make reviews better.

I'm pretty bad with too-long sentences (not necessarily run-on). I've always been pretty wordy, and it wasn't until I took some technical writing and communications classes that I was told that I was using unnecessary verbiage. I'm still a non-stop word monster when I'm not paying attention, but usually I'll look back at a sentence and make it more concise.

I try my best when reviewing to use proper grammar, no doubt i need some work. I hope everyone finds my reviews easy to use, I try my best, and that is all I can do. I will get better as time goes on.

When I am leaving comments, or posting on the forum, I am less formal and care less about grammar

as right now..its New Years, and I am a little...sauced... So I am hoping this message appears how i wanted it to in the morning. I would never drink and review, that is for sure.

What I have noticed in a lot of reviews is missing words or wrong words. This, for me, takes away from the quality of the review. I know that I have to go back and reread my reviews before submitting to avoid as many errors as possible.

So true. Like knocking someone up means waking them up and all their uses for the word sod. I love British slang.

I'll never forget when I first heard that song where they sing "Pissing the night away". All I could think was how in the hell could someone get all worked up about peeing! I felt like a fool when I found out what it really meant!!

Oh goodness, I hate that! I know perfectly well that I'm correct, but MS Word lies! It's much better on spelling than grammar.

I do tend to get a little comma happy. I try not to, but I do. It's part of my "voice" from what a writing professor told me. I write the way I speak, and the commas show where there are pauses, as Mr. Sauce said.

One of my worst silly typos is a variant on the dreaded "teh". "Teh" doesn't happen very often for me, but "to the" often morphs into "tot eh" or "tot he". Makes me feel very silly.

Something else to be on the watch for when you're writing reviews is the cliche.

"is the best ever"
"...is a breeze"
"...is a dream"
"All it takes is..."

We're all guilty of using them from time to time; however, they really detract from your review. In a copy-writing situation, they'd be tossed out.

Sometimes, even the use of a cliche (or commonly used phrase or term) will ruin an entire review. Yeah, that sounds extreme...but think of how many reviews you've read that consisted almost entirely of one cliche after another and how useful that entire review was.

Ok, just had to throw that out there to get it out of my head. THANKS!

I just thought of something that is a little aggravating when I read it. It's when people say, "I could care less." It should be, "I couldn't care less." Using the word "could" says the opposite of what they're trying to say.

Oh yeah, guilty of that here too! And then comes the attack of the commas for me.

One thing I have really noticed is people being overly critical about grammar in reviews. I have seen people leave comments remarking on one or two grammar errors and leaving the reviewer hurt or angry. Sometimes, when things are really bad, I will comment on grammar. For example, if it makes the review hard to read or it is obvious that the reviewer is not paying attention. I think that, for the most part, we need to give people the benefit of the doubt and not nit pick too much. At the same time, I also think that the advanced reviewers should have very few grammatical errors in their reviews.

I'm really critical but I've never thought "All it takes is.." would ruin a review. Interesting.

not so much ruin a review, but if it comes across as a QVC script or a really cheesy commercial, you might want to consider rewording it.

I am bumping this thread. Mainly because I wonder how many other grammar-fantatics are around and why so many people use 'your' instead of 'you're'.

The difference between the two words is enormous when it comes to reviews detailing use of an item. Your = possessive and You're = you are.

Grammer, punctuation, sentence structure and spelling are vital to reviews that flow easily and can be understood by virtually everyone. Switching between present and past tense can also be really confusing; I'm sure I've been guilty of this myself.

The reviews I see where an editor/mentor has submitted the final review for publication and still contain errors are usually the reviews I downvote. Presentation is everything!

(I hope this doesn't come off as mean or anything, I've just been seeing it a lot and instead of seething about it I thought I'd say something. )

Har, as I was reading through this, I was thinking, "Oh! Ohhh! I'm going to add the annoyance and irony of the misspelling of 'grammar'." I'm tickled you made that mistake, Audra (not trying to pick, I swear!). ^_^

It also annoys me when people confuse "then" and "than." I think it's mostly because I say them differently, and I feel like there should be no difficulty in spelling them correctly.

I've recently taken it upon myself to master the words 'lay' and 'lie.' I feel like it's almost unnatural to say something like, "Last night, I lay in bed for 3 hours trying to fall asleep," but it's proper! It's been my Achilles heel for quite a long time, but I shall master it yet!

Haha, I love it! PERFECT EXAMPLE OF NOT CHECKING YOUR WORK. BUSTED!

Thanks for pointing it out, seriously. You see I did at least get it right ONCE. Hahaha. Maybe I need that beer after all.

If/then statement
Than = Comparison

I was going to mention that one as well. The lay/lie thing drives me batty too!
