Have you ever changed you star rating to get better publicity for your review?

Contributor: oopsy oopsy
So the most helpful positive and negative review end up on the main product page, and I was wondering if anyone ever changes their overall star rating, just up or down a little, to get on the page. For example, I just rated a product that I gave 3 stars, but if I had given it two, I probably would have stood out more and made the main page, and hence gotten more votes. I've never done it myself, but the thought has crossed my mind

So who's guilty of this one?

I've never thought about doing it. I submit that if I write quality reviews that are entertaining and informative, I won't have to worry about bumping my rating up like that.

I feel the rating should be an honest one, lying about it does not help the customer/person reading it. Plus that's just wrong.

It may work briefly, but over time, as the item collects more reviews, I think it won't make enough of a difference.

I've never done it, I don't really care that much about whether or not my particular review is the star "featured" review. I'd rather it best reflected my particular experience with the item at hand.

I never actually thought about it. I want to give honest feedback...

I don't think it would help, but the review stands on it's own. If you want more action on your reviews, pick popular products like the liberator line.

This, absolutely! That's really wrong...

Nah, I don't care if I'm on the main page. I just like writing reviews and having the right to rate it exactly as I think it deserves.

Ratings should be honest and have some logic behind the rating. If you are rating purely to get your review on the product page, then it has no logic. Everyone has their own logic behind their ratings. If you want people to read your review, give it a eye popping title, include detailed information, and use the post your latest review thread. After sometime you will get regulars to your great reviews.

Toys should be rated on how well they function and perform as they are intended by the manufacturer, not to gain more exposure for your reviews or to land on the main page for "most helpful".

No I try to be as honest as I can be when I review.

Exactly!! The reason we review the items are to help future purchasers, not our 'ratings' or exposure on the site!! Be honest with your reviews and you will gain more in the long run.

No, I rate on my true opinion. I really can't fake a good or bad review. I hope many people don't do this, either. I think honesty is always the best way to get your point across.

It would be a pretty self-defeating thing to do, because while you might temporarily gain more readers, you would permanently damage your credibility as a reviewer.

Never thought to do that. I'm pretty genuine in my reviews.

No, I never even thought people might do that. I really focus on being honest. I'm happy if people see my reviews but I would rather a few people be helped by them than get a ton of comments from people who might then buy the product thinking of it differently than if I had rated it correctly.

Though I don't see anything wrong with this if you are already on the fence between two ratings.

The stars reflect what you REALLY think about the item, and you should be honest about it.

I do not do that at all. I vote on what I really think about the product. Alot of things get 4 stars for me because they're nice but not overly. If I hate it, I will rate it lower.

No, I have only changed reviews rating if I thought I was focusing too much on my wants and needs. When you write a review it's not just about you but if you think others would enjoy it or how it would effect them. I try to find the middle ground of both when rating so I don't do anything based on 'publicity'.

Nope and I've never even thought about it to be honest. I really like to be as upfront as I can about everything I review. If I love it, I'll rave about it but still make note of any possible cons. If I hate it, I'll rant about it but I'll also do my best to point out any positives that I can find and mention who it may work for. What's best for me might be too strong for the next person and what ends up being a dud for me, might rock someone elses world. Honest reviews make the best reviews and I'm glad to see the way everyone voted
