I haven't seen much porn since I was a teen long ago. I wasn't picky then because... I was a teenager. Plus my guy friends always picked.

Anyway, I've just picked up some DVDs. I don't feel it takes any special porn background to note things like bad lighting, camera angles, guy who can't get it up for 10 minutes, etc.

But I'm clueless as far as conventions & trends are in porn now. I mean, if you had me write a review a week ago I would have probably commented that all the spitting was odd. Now I know there's a whole spit genre.

Do ya'll think common sense & some knowledge about film would be adequate to review a DVD? Do you think having a "casual watcher" opinion vs. a hardcore porn fiend perspective would be useful? Or should I watch a bunch more before reviewing?

As a casual watcher myself, I'd rather have the opinion of another casual watcher who's going to tell me what the content of the movie was like, and not a "hardcore porn fiend" who's going to focus most of the review on technical aspects of performance of the actors, lighting, etc.

I agree with Sam. I too and a casual watcher myself. You opinion is going to be useful as long as your review is. I would just write the review about the porn like you would any other movie. You do not have to be like "he bend her over doggy style and cam all over her face" unless that is what you want to be. My first DVD assignment I made a huge list of questions for each scene and watched the movie writing the stuff down.

Are they using any toys? Who is in the scene? What are they wearing? Where are they? Anything "weird/usual" ; going on? Anything hot about the scene? How is the filming? Is there background music? Is there weird lighting or flashing in the scene? Anything that grosses you out? Any turn ons?

Things like that. I hope I helped.

The best thing about reviewing on Eden is that you can choose to focus on the aspects you think are important. I've written a few DVD reviews and while it wasn't difficult to get all of the info in, I did find it difficult to remain objective. For instance, I don't find Nina Hartley attractive at all and she reminds me of my grandmother, but that doesn't mean someone else wouldn't find her attractive. Or, that I had a pretty big problem with Amy Fisher being cast into a movie based on Fatal Attraction given her real life circumstances...

I would consider myself pretty hardcore when it comes to porn and I'm always looking for something I've never seen before and when I don't get it, I get very bored, very quickly. That's just me, though.

Read through the reviews for Fatal Seduction and Stepmother4 and I think you'll get a pretty good understanding of how each person perceived the aspects of the films very differently.

And I could be mistaken, because there is literally a genre for everything out there but I'm unaware of an actual spitting genre. There's cum swapping, but the spitting thing is the lazy man's guide to lube. It's disgusting and I think just about everyone who has written reviews for Eden finds it to be very unattractive and distracting. (I know I'd flip my shit if my husband ever spit on me the way these guys do in the pornos.)

Part of what I appreciate about Eden's reviews is that people come from all different perspectives, and your perspective is valuable. Don't try to write the review as someone other than yourself-- embrace what makes your perspective your own.

Hehe. I hear what you're saying about trouble being objective with certain actors. There's a girl in something I watched recently that just bugged me horribly. I don't even know why- she must remind me of someone.

Thanks for the examples. I'll check those out. DVDs seem to get reviewed less than toys, so I've not had as many examples to check out.

Eh, the spit thing: It may not be enough to be an actual "genre," but there's definitely a spit thing. Girls spitting in each others' mouths. Guys getting the sloppiest possible blow jobs & then having the girl suck all the spit back in or rub it on herself, etc. Not a lube thing... just... a focus on drool. *shrug* If you Google "spit porn" you'll find sites dedicated to it. Regardless, I don't think that's something I'm ever going to understand.

I've just been trying to find things I own that don't already have 800 reviews & noticed that DVDs get reviewed much less than toys. So, that seemed like a possibility. I just didn't want to be unintentionally offensive or incomplete due to lack of background knowledge. I think I'll give one a try. Thanks again, everyone.

Haha, I see. That just sounds like regular old porn to me. Sloppy blow jobs are the "every man's fantasy" according to the entertainment industry. Now, if they could learn how to show sloppy oral ON the women in the films, I'd be totally down. Eh, I think the best review I ever wrote was for the DVD Wonderland on Eden. If you're into something with a little bit more of a plot, I highly suggest you check that out. There's no spitting and it mostly focuses on the manipulation of the main character, Gary, instead of him manipulating his female counterpart.

Even if you have viewed just one porn DVD I think you have the right to review the DVD. After all who says you have to be a hardcore porn viewer to review a porn DVD? I think it is good to read reviews from a casual viewer as well as a hardcore porn viewer. So long as you are honest in your review about what you liked and didn't like about the DVD that is all that counts in my opinion.

I don't really watch porn, so I wouldn't really know how to review it. But I don't think I'd really care how the lighting was unless it was so bad all you could see is darkness.
I'd really want to know what the porn was kinda about, and how you thought it was.
