Suggestion: Upgrade to the Product Search Function?

Contributor: lexical lexical
In all the time I've been reviewing here (almost two years now), I don't believe the review program product search function has been updated at all. Now that the rest of the site has metamorphosed from online sex shop into the sophisticated, welcoming, user-friendly *community*, I would like to suggest taking a look at this seemingly neglected area! Compared to the rest of the site, the search is so clunky and hard to use!

Is there a better way available to search for new toys and items that need to be reviewed? Am I just out of the loop? Or does the review program product search truly need an update?

I think that it really needs a way to search for products that have one or two reviews, but could use further attention! As it is, we can only search for products that have reviews (from 1 to any number) and products that don't have any at all. I think it'd be really handy to be able to find those ones that only have one or two.

As for the categories, I think we ought to be able to search for and select multiple attributes or types of toys to browse all at once, similar to the search system on the rest of the site. I would love to be able to select vibrators, dildos, and anal toys and any other combination to browse together in one search!

I also think we need a better way to easily scroll through the results. I've had problems in the past with moving to page 27 or so of one search and then going to search again and remaining on page 27 somehow, which is blank, now that the new results only go to page 4, for example. Then I have to click the [...] and head all the way back to page one manually. That should automatically reset, shouldn't it?

What do you guys think?

P.S. I haven't spent much time on the forums in the past, so please let me know if I post in the wrong sections or anything!

Okay! I remember it being about the same since I started using the site, but I may be wrong Either way, I think it could use a revamping!

Yes, it is has been updated quite a number of times. There have been a number of classification conflicts, between sponsors, available products, various stages of product entry, as well assignments and orders working independently...

However, if you have any specific suggestions or ideas, please let us know!

I think my main issue with it is being unable to search for products that are available for free review still...even if they have one or two reviews, you can still request them so that you can add some more input, right? But the search system only allows you to search products that have zero reviews...thus leaving out all the other ones that may require attention. Could there be an option added to search for items that are available or not available to request for free review?

I would love to have the little (i) Quick View popup (like, what's available on search pages, next to Add to Compare, etc) so we can see basic information (dimensions, material, etc) on the product without having to go to the page. That would be awesome.

Is there a chance of adding a function based on the number of reviews or if the toy is still available for review?

Yes I think definately we should be able to search better for the items that have no reviews, or only one or two. That would help me to request things that have not been reviewed by fifteen people.

I have had problems with search on here also, so I completely agree with everything you are saying as well.

Here is the product search tutorial.

When you do a product search you have a field for "Review Status". This is where you can select "with reviews" or "without reviews". If you select "without reviews" you'll have a list of products that don't have any published reviews. There could be reviews in progress that won't show up until they go live.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, JR! I know that we are able to search for products that are without any reviews at all...but even when a product has one or two reviews, we can still request them. There is currently no way to easily locate those products that have a review or two, but still need more attention and are still available for free review.

There's only a way to find products with no reviews. Because, really...if we're searching for a product to review, we wouldn't search for one that *does* have reviews, right? I've personally never used the review program product search to seek out products that already have reviews...I only want the ones that don't have reviews (or only have one or two) so that I can find something to request!

I wasn't aware of this. I thought it just searched through available reviews.

Hey, everyone. I wanted to bump this thread up, rather than start a new one.

Are there any plans to update the search system? It's incredibly frustrating that there's no way to easily view all of the products that are available to request for free reviews. It would benefit potential reviewers and also benefit EF to have a system where we could view a comprehensive list, rather than just a fraction of what's available!

Suggestions:

-Upgrade the format of it so that it's easier to navigate/view items. The majority of EF is so well designed! I wish that carried over to the search system. It seems clunky and antiquated. Being able to "view all" or simply have an arrow beside the list to click over to the next page would be nice.

-Indicate (or remove from results) items that are NOT available on principle. For example, the lingerie/clothing items are not available for free request, but they still show up on the product search.

-Do away with the "With Reviews" and "Without Reviews" option...Replace it with "Available for request" and "Unavailable" or something along those lines. That way, in combination with the pricing options, reviewers can find items with few enough reviews that they are still available! (Although, really...does anyone use the search for anything other than finding items that are available for free review? Couldn't we just have ONLY available items show up when you use the review program product search?)

I use it to also look for buyout assignments, so no I don't just use it to find free assignments.

But you can get any product as a buy out. So, you can just search in general on the website and get whatever you want (regardless of price/number of existing reviews), as opposed to needing to look specifically in the review program product search.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but will lingerie stop coming up in the searches soon? I know they aren't available for free review and it takes ages to get through pages and pages of leggings, etc. I wish there was a way to search for multiple types of products, I'd just check "everything EXCEPT lingerie."

I also second lexical's "Available for request" option suggestion.

I use the product search as a catalog of all items on EF, including ones not currently offered or discontinued. The only other way to locate such items would be to search under reviews and link back to the product page.

All right. I don't use it for the other things mentioned, so I wasn't sure. In the interest of keeping the search multi-use, I retract my suggestion about making it JUST an available item search.

But I maintain that we definitely need an easier way to view ALL of the items that are available for free reviews...the product search is practically useless in that respect. It only shows a small amount of the available items...

Okay...now I'm peeved. Why on earth would Eden put a product into the search for manufacturer sponsered products for review if they have over 3 reviews? I saw the Bootie on the product search and thought it would be great for a vaginal plug but I was quickly informed by the system that it had more than 3 reviews. That and all of that lingerie that's not available...

There should be a way that only products with less than 3 reviews show up in the product search function for assignments. Any item can be selected for a buyout so I don't really see the need to include those products in the product search in the review program category.

Agreed! When I select "for free assignment," I still get products with 2+ advanced reviews. Yet if I try to request a review in my assignment cart, it always catches any conflicts. Why not just apply that function to the search?

Yay! I'm glad that it's not just me who get frustrated with the search...Thanks for your input, folks.
